That's very interesting. I have to agree with your stepdad that, in situations of danger, our power to reason is trumped by our insticts and we will just try to survive. In those moments, time literally freezes. When I was driving with my friend and that guy pulled out right in front of us, the only thing I could do was to bring my hands to my face. That is a natural reaction. There was no time to think "rationally".
