What a voice to wake up to!

Early morning post.

I've been doing some thinking, some feeling, about how as a straight girl in middle-class America I am expected to be both an asshole and unenlightened. I am being told in so many different ways that I should just cease to exist for the simple reason that my presence is contributing the very opposite of something positive, ( Read more... )

But the oldest babyboomers are only 59. They still have a good 30 years of life, maybe more with advancing technology. They are retiring, true, leaving the halls of academia and politica to the whippersnappers. But they are not yet dead! And I bet they will continue to vote until they draw their collective last breath, another two generations from now. Scary, eh?

what I mean is that past the age of 60 I'd think their social influence on current ideas is significantly diminished. These things are always a progression naturally, and my fuss was caused by the fact that this is a specific demographic condition fairly unique in terms of the world's population, ie - it's a HUGE spike of the population dropping out of the work force and academic influence (again, for the most part, clearly not everyone over 60). It's almost as if this shift in thinking required such a strange condition.

PS - thank you for the link, it was awesome.

if people followed thier own nature there would be no feminism since gender-roles and isms exist only to give the insecure a way to feel important or at least something to do.

thanks to modern capitalism and dual income families, now we live in a more product oriented world where people are free to experiment with thier percieved sexualities, since we now have things to make us feel good about ourselves. i know more skaters then feminists. more computer geeks. people who dress in certain images.... who have rrsps or go to neat schools... dj's and such, not to mention drug culture, or alcoholism. people are too busy to have especially meaningful relationships, and thier attention spans are too short for thier own feelings.

in fact... in a "me" orriented world there will eventually be no roles at all... just faster constant demands from ever restless people.
