And I remember when your friend told you that. I never really understood how it was that it was supposed to make us less afraid. I mean, the time before we were born already happened, which is why I'm not afraid of it.

I'll stop talking. That movie was just depressing. It crept up on me, too. I thought it was going to be all fun and weird, and I didn't realize until too late what was going on.

Well, if time were moving the other direction, I would be afraid of the time before I was born. The whole idea of flattening out time, if you want to call it that, is sometimes temporarily comforting, but flattening time turns out to be harder to do than to talk about.

Why is everyone so afraid of dying? I'm afraid of PAIN, and afraid of the pain that sometimes occurs while dying, but death? No. Whatever happens will be better than all this. If there is another plane of existence, then that means we get to figure out how to exist in it, which will be incredibly interesting and fun. If there's nothingness, then we finally get to relax, instead of always worrying about how we're going to pay the rent. It's win-win.

And I started "The Rainbow Stories" but put it down when I got to the story that took place in ancient Babylon or whatever. I couldn't follow what the hell was going on.

Why did you think I would like this book so much? All the strippers and skinheads dancing around the first few stories gave me the heebie-jeebies.

That story was the one that made me think of you. Oh well.

I started Hard-Boiled Wonderland and put it down. There were all these mystical creatures being introduced, and a private dick type guy. But it's still a great title, so I highly recommend it.

Haha. Yeah, it was a really depressing movie. It tricked me into thinking it wasn't going to be depressing, too, which is part of why I felt like I needed to share that depression with (that portion of ) the world (that is willing to read my lj (i.e. you, Robert, Natalie, and maybe one or two others)).

Memento good. Much less depressing. Much more edgy and hip.

It's my last day of Chinese class today, and if I have time I'll post a translation of the depressing ("cute," according to my teacher) poem we read.

Hi son,
-0-10 yrs - don't really think about death
-sometime around puberty the concept of death starts to develop
-twenties, death is a distant but recognizable reality
-after marriage and kids, death becomes a concern
-40-50 death is not a question of if but when, closer but still down the road.
-60+ death is no longer a question of when but what.
After life, never really belived in it... until you were born... then I hoped for it so I wouldn't loose touch with you.
Love you
Dad
