a sample reading

So. The Johns-Hopkins Nanjing Institute. Institute? Fine, I don't even know what it's called. Happy now? Anyway, in case I haven't mentioned this, I got in. I have until the 17th to make a decision, but I'd like to do it before that.

I virtually1 attended an online Q&A for prospective HNC students (Center, not Institute) the other day. Interesting ( Read more... )

blargh this is not only hard, but BORING. I do think a lot of the difficulty is vocab though, so maybe it's not quite as bad as one fears. the sentence structure seems to be relatively simple.

giving it a second reading, i'm lost with some of the idioms...dammit, not easy.

you don't read simplified? That might be a real concern. Then again, there's no time like the present to start learning simplified.

Yeah, it is boring. I'm not too concerned about simplified, actually. A lot of other people are in the same boat, and I kind of want to learn simplified anyway.

I'm more concerned with the boringness. Is what I'd be reading that boring? I don't know. Presumably they would want to put their best foot forward sending this stuff out.

I'd also say that "virtual" is out as a word in the sense you're using it.

I also thought of something just now: maybe you should try to track down someone who's done the Hopkins-NJ program and ask them about it. This is boring, but maybe they're just trying to impress you with difficulty and not content. I can't imagine the cultural stuff being this bad--although I'm sure they could quash that naive assumption in a hurry, if they wanted.

On the "tracking down someone who has done the HNC thing" topic:
You should email Catherine. Catherine Matacic. If you don't have her email I have it, or alternately she's on your flickr contact list (makailin).
She did the one-year HNC program, and now I believe she's working for the Washington Post in some city in China. Shanghai or Beijing or some place.

Oh, and for the record, simplified Chinese characters suck. But you should do the program anyway =P
