Coreline will be adopting a Patronage / Commision system for almost all new material.
A Rationale for change
The apathy of the audience over the last ten years has brought about the almost total removal of the cultural value of music. Music is now a consumable with no monetary value. It is expected that artists should present their work for free out of passion for the art form; Those that do are made to beg for scraps of respect from an audience which treats them with a palatable air of amusement mixed with mild irritation: as a parent would treat a child who haven't yet learned how to eat his porridge with a spoon. Those that don’t are branded materialistic, luddistic dinosaurs of the 'old music industry' and openly mocked by the 'forward thinking' commentators for their 'unrealistic' expectations. Any middle ground is fractious and quiet, as in today's polarized society a moderate opinion is no opinion at all.
In this environment I have decided to make a stand for myself. My compositional ability, my hard earned skills, room full of equipment and long-learnt talent has an intrinsic cultural value and no one, regardless of how clever they are will make me beg for their attention. My music demands your attention, it is the driver of the exchange, and you will shut up and listen to it or fuck off, I don’t work for you..
If you believe that statement is arrogant or even impertinent then you had best exercise your sole right as a consumer and take your attention elsewhere, ill leave you a paragraph break to collect your coat and get out.
…
Ok for anyone who is left your either
a) preparing a scathing, well argued, enlightened rebuttal of the audacity of a producer taking ownership of his product.. Don’t expect a reply.
b) wondering where im going with this
Essentially, above all the clatter of spears and lines drawn on a map I have been left in an odd position. I cant give up music wholesale, it would be a massive insult to those who supported me through ten years of study, that said, I also no longer want anything to do with the affore mentioned cultural neglect which is taking a hatchet to music as an art form in our world. So I intend to drastically re-train, update the technologies I use, become more efficient in the technologies I own already and sunset the long suffering but unfit for purpose elements of the studio. Ill continue to use the moniker coreline and its logo to represent my intellectual property however the output wont be noise.
Patronage / Commision system:
You as the consumer can now commission work from me as the composer - you pay a flat fee for a track, and the agreement is guided by the following stipulations:
- Cost - Each commission will cost a minimum of £30, this may increase depending on the scope of the music, artistic objections, timeframe constraints or other elements which I will discuss with you, this price is to throttle demand so I can give each track the full attention it needs. If I get no engagement then I will assume no one wants the music and retire gracefully.
- Delivery - Once commissioned the maximum lead time will be six months, though it may be done as quickly as one weekend. It will be delivered in any format you want within reason.
- Scope - You can specify at some considerable level of detail the high level elements of the work - samples, styles, key signatures, tempo, tracks to draw inspiration from, essentially, the patron can specify the criteria within which I will compose.
- Review - once the work is delivered you will be allowed to request changes, again at a high level, and only one iteration, so I don’t end up spending months adding more cowbell after spending a week adding cowbell
- Ownership - Once signed off, the client has full mechanical rights to the recording… you know the disclaimer on the back of cd's saying what you cant do with the music, you have the exact opposite, the only thing you cannot do is claim someone else wrote it other then me. - intellectual copyright is not transferrable. Aslo, I have all the same rights aswell, so I can still use the track.
- and finally - I reserve the right to tell you to fuck off, depending on how much of a dick you are I will probably offer you a refund.
This probably wont work but it will be an interesting experiment if nothing else.
in other news....
Moving forward into a more interactive, generative and compositional music 'post collapse' coreline will need different tools and new skills. Pro-tools will need to be taken out of the loop - sad as I have spent a long time using it but it is inflexible, pretty usless for live work, tied to hardware and operates on a tectonic release cycle. Demising Pro-Tools means I no longer need to focus on mac as the main platform, it is mearly an expensive option. For the moment, I am opting to stick with mac as my backups, operating expertease and other tools are optimised to work with OSX.
So heres the rub.
