Nintendo, if the price is right will be in a good position. Anyone rich enough to blow $700+ on a PS3 and a few games will be able to buy Wii on impulse almost, and anyone with a 360 already will pick it up as a second console to avoid gaming system inferiorty complex and also because when games cost $60, a $150 system looks goood.
And about the game costs, there was another article about development costs, and according to developers, it is much easier to develop games for Wii than 360 and PS3 because apparently the latter two have completely new development tools while the Wii built upon GC development tools. Easier times for development usually = cheaper games!
Actually, regardless of tools, content creation for Wii will be *signifigantly* cheaper because Wii games do not require HD content. The big companies will set the AAA standards for PS3 and 360, and it will require a developer $10million+ to create quality content to keep up. Wii = current generation dev methods, tools, and lower quality content, as well as more limited space. Even with extra time spent on game design and working the kinks out of the controls, a Wii game should cost millions of dollars less to create, which is good because the big companies will still rely on cross-platform development to recoup some of the costs of those AAA games, and the Wii won't factor into those games because it won't be able to easily use PS3 or 360 assets.
another reason why the GC in its time was cheaper was the fact that both PS2s and Xboxes had to pay DVD format license fees for every unit shipped. (Actually, have they said something about the media for the Wii? I never thought about it)
The more I look at it, the less and less impressed and excited I am about the Wii. The more I think about it, the more I realize waving my arms around in the air to play fairly general games is a gimmick.
I'm actually not impressed with this generation of gaming at all anymore.
