I'm looking for recommendations for horror movies. I've realized I'm really into them, but I have really high (and specific) standards, which I was thinking about the other day ( Read more... )

I've heard good things about Uzumaki - it's a Japanese horror film. Also,The Suicide Club, while perhaps not quite a horror movie, was weird enough to make for worthwhile watching. Otherwise, I can't help you since horror movies render me unable to sleep for weeks on end. I'll ask my friends who are horror fans if they have any additional recommendations.

Glad to hear Attila is doing all right. I don't know if I ever said this, but that's such a kickass name for a cat. :P Especially yours.

I'll definitely check those out.

The people fostering her were calling her "Honey" which was a bit to saccharine for us, but we still wanted to honor it. So we tried to think of nicknames, but the only one was "Hun", which then gained an "Attila the".

The Ring is my favorite by far. It has a lovely (scary) story, a lot of great images, and it's completely fucking terrifying. It's easily ten times as scary as the second scariest movie I've ever seen. You've probably seen it, if you haven't then check it out, HOWEVER: There is one scene where the main adult character is on a boat, and encounters a horse. LEAVE THE ROOM AT THAT POINT. Go somewhere else, plug your ears and sing a happy little song to yourself, and have Derek tell you when it's a good time to come back in (after the boat lands is fine). Other than that scene I believe there's a quick mention of an illness affecting horses and a few brief, grainy, non-graphic shots of downed horses, I don't know if that would bother you or not.

Also, I'm glad that Attila has a non-traumatic way of taking her medicine, cats and medicine don't usually seem to get along that well.

The Ring scared the hell out of me. It's good, because your fear can last for a whole week after it. I've been thinking of seeing the original version, but I'm not sure I can take it.

did you say horror movies? schquee March 4 2010, 20:32:51 UTC
You have to see Ringu and Ringu 2! And Ju-On, the original version of The Grudge. There are a few, like 1 and 2 or 3. Don't watch the US remakes, they are Just Not as Good. They are more full of "boo" moments and explanations where the Japanese versions don't insult your intelligence, and are chock full of menace and creepiness.

Also you may like the Lars Von Trier series Kingdom Hospital. Supernatural stuff going on in a creepy old hospital full of secrets! Plus von Trier's insecure monologues at the end of each show are hilarious.

Little-known fact: The Mist (2007) was AMAZING.

Sorry I'm just a lurky-loo! I came here out of nosiness after seeing your cute apartment on saucydwellings. I will go now. *waves*

Hey! Totally on topic because the room I posted is where I watch the horror movies. I'm really flattered you liked it enough to lurk into my lj.

I totally love The Mist. Best ending ever. The Grudge seemed like it had promise, but unfortunately, I did see the American version. :(

Lars Von Trier, eh? I loved Dancer in the Dark, and I like an embarrassing amount of Stephen King movies, so that sounds like a good bet.

Also, sorry for only recommending popular movies that everyone knows about, but if you haven't seen The Sixth Sense it's a pretty good not-exactly-horror movie with scary (to me) supernatural elements.

I've never gotten all that into frankenstein, although I haven't read the original. What do you like about it?

Which other movies have you enjoyed, specifically? My stock recommendation is the original "The Wicker Man" just because it's so unique, but is most likely not what you're looking for. "Suspiria" was the last good horror film I've seen, but being Italian horror, may also not be what you're looking for.
So basically, anything I'd recommend may not be what you're looking for. Don't listen to me, I guess.

Oh, and in honor of Attila, I guess you could see "Cat's Eye."

There's an original? I heard the new one was terrible. I've enjoyed a lot of good to terrible haunting movies really, I think is what I'm dancing around. Haunted places are so much scarier than just about any monster, now that I think about it, and monsters are so much scarier than slashers.

I'd trust what you recommend to be more what I'm looking for than what I'd get from most people.

The Shining. Only movie that's ever scared me.

Really? The only one? Are you just tough as nails, or do you just not watch horror movies? I saw the Shining when I was probably around 10 -- don't get me wrong, it's scary as all get out, and I don't think my brother really realized he shouldn't have let me watch it.

And recommendation for movies that "almost" scared you?
