The Holy Grail WarServantsMastersServant LancerDiarmuid Ua DuibhneThe Pursuit of Diarmuid and Grainne Personality: First and foremost, some of the most important things to Zero Lancer are honor, chivalry, and loyalty. Whether in or out of combat, he is always a polite and amiable individual acting every bit like a knight should. If in a fight, Lancer will face his opponent on as equal ground as physically possible, up to and including giving himself a handicap should the other participant be injured themselves. He despises the idea of using underhanded tricks and is set on always doing what he believes is right no matter the cost, typical of his canon Lawful Neutral alignment.
Loyalty is absolutely vital to him; even in life he was unquestioningly devoted to his role as one of the Fianna and torn over betraying Fionn mac Cumhaill for the sake of Grainne's desire to run away with him. Even at the moment of his death Diarmuid blamed neither of them; on the contrary, he admired Grainne for casting aside all that she had for her love and remained devoted to her and to Fionn until his death. As Servant Lancer, he is loyal to Kayneth Archibald El-Melloi nearly without question despite the latter's use of underhanded tactics and general cruelty. The only times Lancer ever disputes an order from his Master is when it contradicts directly with what he believes in: for a perfect example, he refused to team up with Berserker in order to defeat Saber (with whom he had wished for an even and fair duel).
In general, Zero Lancer is a calm and collected person, even when angered. He is slow to an actual display of rage, doing so only as his final action upon being betrayed by Kayneth and forced to commit suicide. Otherwise he is a rational individual that would likely look for a way to resolve an argument as calmly and peacefully as possible.
This is not, however, saying that he is unwilling or unable to fight. Being the first knight of the Fianna led by Fionn mac Cumhaill, he is a force to be reckoned with in combat. Among the Fate series' three Lancer-class Servants, Fate/Zero's is unique in that he uses a pair of spears rather than one; Gáe Dearg and Gáe Buidhe. Like the others of his class, Zero Lancer possesses blinding agility and speed, using one or both spears with near impossible skill. His insight and perception in combat are also considerable, shown when he is able to lead even the cautious Saber into a difficult position using both of his lances.
Also of note regarding his supernatural abilities is the small mark below his right eye. It is in reality a curse, causing any woman with low magic resistance to fall in love with him on sight-including Grainne and Kayneth's fiancee Sola-Ui Nuada-Re Sophia-Ri.
Game Specific:
Arcana: Tower
Justification:
Upright
-Deconstruction of belief system: Lancer firmly believes in fighting fairly and with honor...which is something very difficult to do with a less-than-chivalrous Master.
-A moment of clarity: In his final seconds of life, Lancer realizes that Kayneth has used a Command Spell to order him to commit suicide in the middle of his promised duel with Saber-he understands that his fate was to have history repeat itself. Enraged, he dies cursing everything within sight.
-New found freedom: He regards the Holy Grail War itself as a miracle; with his summoning, he believes he has the chance to reclaim his pride by winning and claiming the Grail in his Master's name.
Reversed
-Consequences of past behaviors: The reasoning for him wanting to win the war is that in doing so he will earn redemption for his past mistakes in betraying Fionn and thus eradicating the guilt he feels over doing so.
-Internal conflict: On one hand, Kayneth is a cruel and uncaring individual who couldn't care less about having his Servant fight with honor. On the other, he is still Lancer's Master, and his loyalty will absolutely not be broken.
-Shock: Kayneth's betrayal leading to his death was a tremendous shock for Lancer, leading the calm Servant to die lamenting fate in a fit of rage.
-A crisis: Sola-Ui's attraction to him perfectly echoes Grainne's own, something that does not escape Lancer's notice. He refuses her as he could not do to Grainne, desperate to not repeat mistakes and betray a second master.

Forgive me if I'm doing this wrong, but I'm not entirely sure how this device is meant to work.
[The voice over the phone is calm and steady, sounding as if it belongs to a man in his mid-twenties.]
Can anyone tell me what's going on? I don't think I'm meant to be here-where is 'here', if I can ask? It doesn't look like Fuyuki City-
[A pause-if this wasn't Fuyuki, then where did that leave him? A Servant without a Master? No, not even a Servant...this body was human, that much was clear. But how? What magic aside from the Holy Grail itself could make a Servant into a mortal?]
-...and I seem to be missing several things. [That was true; though he still wore his armor at the moment, both his Noble Phantasms were gone. Considering that moments ago one had been stabbed through his chest, this was concerning on several different levels.]
I would appreciate a little help....ah, I forgot to introduce myself. Please, just call me Lancer.
Third Person Sample:
[Fate was a difficult thing, wasn't it? Being cursed, being betrayed by those to whom he had sworn loyalty...was this to be his fate for all of eternity? Repeating history again and again? Was the desire for redemption simply not enough?!]
[Those were among the last thoughts Servant Lancer had expected to have. One didn't continue breathing for long with Gáe Dearg through their heart.]
[So waking up with little more than a faint ache in his chest was nothing short of a complete shock.]
Wh... [He could hardly even speak. Why, how was he here and where was 'here' anyway? The dark-haired Servant took quick inventory of the situation-no lance, no bloodstains, no Saber or the woman she accompanied. Nothing save for a city a short distance away.]
[And upon standing up, Lancer slowly realized something. He felt no connection to his Master, none of the link that kept a Servant in the world. In fact, he felt remarkably unlike a Servant at all.]
That's...impossible. [Wasn't it? His movement and reflexes felt slower, converting to spirit form was found to be impossible, and he couldn't summon his Noble Phantasm. Not only was he alive, but it seemed to be that he was alive as a human. There was a moment's pause in which Lancer looked over to the nearby city. It didn't look like Fuyuki, not to mention the weather felt different than it had mere moments ago. Where else would he get answers as to what strange dream he had landed in?]
[As he took a few steps towards civilization, Lancer felt his foot strike against something small; a cellphone, upon further inspection. This would keep getting more peculiar, wouldn't it? A genuinely confused look on his face, the former Servant decided to take it with him-it might have been useful, after all.]

Fandom: Fate/Zero
Character Notes: I'm...not sure if I should warn for Fate/Zero spoilers? The novels have been out for some time, but the anime only started recently. Welp, consider this fair warning, I guess.
History: Lancer's legend begins in the twelfth century medieval Ireland. The main focus on Diarmuid Ua Duibhne himself is found in The Pursuit of Diarmuid And Gráinne. Essentially, it is as follows:
► Diarmuid was the first knight of the Fianna led by Fionn mac Cumhaill. His loyalty was without question, and he was in every respect a good and honorable knight in service to Fionn.
► Fionn took a woman named Gráinne as his intended bride. When their engagement was celebrated among the Fianna, Gráinne caught sight of Diarmuid and was captivated by the mark under his right eye--a divine curse causing all women that saw his face to fall in love with him.
► Gráinne placed a
geas on Diarmuid so that he would elope with her. Asking his fellow knights what they would do in his position, all of them replied the only right thing to do would be to run away with her even though it would mean his death.
► Defying Fionn for the sake of what was right, Diarmuid fled with Gráinne from an enraged Fionn and a divided Fianna--most of whom were on Diarmuid's side and refused to fight him. When it came to the ones that would make attempts on his life, Diarmuid refused to fight due to his loyalty to the knights he had once fought beside.
► Eventually, Diarmuid's foster father intervened and settled things between him and Fionn; Diarmuid and Gráinne settled in one place and eventually had five children. (Donnchad, Eochaid, Connla, Selbsercach, and Ollann.)
► Diarmuid's end came years later, when a bitter Fionn refused to heal a mortal wound sustained as what essentially amounted to a hunting accident. Those among the Fianna that counted themselves as Diarmuid's friends never forgave Fionn for his betrayal, and the Fianna in general seem to have never recovered from the resulting quarreling and infighting.
In short, if Fionn is the Celtic version of King Arthur then Diarmuid is the equivalent of Lancelot. You all still with me so far? Good. Hang on, because here's where it gets confusing.
Fate/Zero:
▻ After Waver Velvet steals the artifact to summon Rider, Diarmuid is summoned by Kayneth Archibald El-Melloi in his place as Servant Lancer in the Fourth Holy Grail War.
▻ Lancer is mistrusted and constantly berated by Kayneth, who believes Lancer plans to steal his fiancee, Sola. This causes the Servant no small amount of pain, but his loyalty to Kayneth remains the same regardless.
▻ His fight with Saber is the first legitimate conflict in the Holy Grail War. He finds himself with a deep respect for her due to both her deep sense of honor and her skill in combat matching his own. As the series goes on, his fondest wish is to see a fair and even fight with her to its conclusion.
▻ At one point, he intervenes in an argument between Kayneth and Sola in Kayneth's defense. This only serves to annoy his Master, as he believes (correctly) that Sola has fallen for Lancer and (incorrectly) that he plans to run away with her.
▻ Lancer plays a vital part in defeating Caster, working alongside Saber and Rider to destroy the Servant before he ruins all of Fuyuki City. He works in perfect synchronization with Saber, wishing in part to ensure her survival so that they can finish their fight with each other.
▻ When Sola is taken by Kiritsugu for the purpose of being held hostage, Kayneth blames Lancer entirely. Calling Lancer a womanizer and a traitor. In a matter of minutes he completely breaks down his Servant's pride, all while Lancer still sincerely insists his only wish is to defend his honor and fight for his Master.
▻ Shortly after, Lancer is sent to confront Saber one last time. The two face each other in the most even conditions possible, mutual respect between them not allowing anything else but their best efforts.
▻ Holding Sola hostage, Kiritsugu secretly negotiates with Kayneth during Lancer and Saber's duel. The conditions of his safety and Sola's would be for Kayneth to order Lancer's forced suicide by Command Spell.
▻ Stabbing himself with his own lance in the middle of his fight with Saber, Lancer finally snaps and erupts into a hate-filled rage cursing everything in sight; Kayneth, Kiritsugu, the world at large and even Saber. Lancer dies cursing the Holy Grail and whatever wish they could ever have made on it.

[Volume 3, act 11, part 3.]
Kayneth Archibald El-Melloi is a spectacular magus. That is not something I question. It is to him I have sworn loyalty and it is in his service I raise my blade in combat. It was by his hand I have been summoned, and to him I will bring victory in the form of the Holy Grail.
So...why? Why does he question me and meet my loyalty with distaste and scorn in his heart? Have I not proven myself properly? Does he truly not know the lengths I would go to in his service? Was it truly my fault that Sola has disappeared? How could I have known, I have no spiritual connection to her. Is it too much to ask that she should be able to defend herself in my absence?!
[Frustration was evident in his voice now. Lancer shook his head slightly, lowering his gaze to the floor. When he spoke again, he was back to his usual calm composure.]
Please...someone tell me what it is I've done to deserve my Master's hatred.
Tell me why he doesn't understand.
Third Person:
Diarmuid had been fortunate. This was fact, and he would not deny it. His fondest wish was to be summoned from the Throne of Heroes into the Holy Grail War--in that way, there was no wish that he could want from the artifact that could perform miracles. No, in merely fighting in service to a Master he was halfway there...all that was left was to win. To bring his Master victory, and in doing so redeem himself for turning his back on Fionn.
So he was fortunate, even if his Master hated him. Even if the position he was summoned into looked more and more like Fionn and Grainne as the days wore on. Lancer had no right to complain, and so he wouldn't.
But perhaps the most fortunate part was that among Kayneth's books on magic he had found that one--here would he be without those he spoke to on the network? A knight was nothing without allies to confide in. Without the Fianna he would have been lost long before his flight had begun. Now he had those from Fuyuki and elsewhere, across time and space itself.
He was incredibly fortunate.
So why, staring at a sky that held no answers and clutching that exact book as if it were his final link to sanity...why did he not feel like it? Was he being selfish in wanting more than that? Could it have been selfish for a knight to wish for a lord that understood him?
Nothing made sense in this Holy Grail War. All Lancer knew were two things: he was in service to Kayneth and would see his fight with Saber concluded. That was all he knew, and for a knight that was enough.
