keratosis pilaris

some of you may already know this about me (or have noticed it) but I have a skin condition called keratosis pilaris. up until a year or two ago I didn't know what it was, or that it even had it's own name. all I knew was that I hated the fact that the skin on my arms, legs and belly was not as clear and smooth as "everyone else's" appeared to be ( Read more... )

I know how it be to have something goin on you cant control. Sucks to know that you didnt cause it, but still end up feeling bad about it. Its not a fun feeling.
Mad props for finding out all about it learning to love thyself in the non dirty way.

I have had success calming the symptoms with jergens alpha beta hydroxy lotion applied after a shower using a scrubby-style puff. apparently the a-b hydroxy really helps break down the oils that clog each follicle. i'm pretty lazy about lotioning though :) additionally, uv rays help as well and if you check out the forums sometimes you'll find people debating whether or not it's a good "treatment" to get tans and such, of course because of the risk for skin cancer. I did find that increased sun exposure to my legs and arms helped quite a bit over the summer, even with sunscreen on.

I only found out about it because my mom took my brother to the doctor to ask him what it was. my brother's is a bit more intense than mine is, and mom had it as well when she was in her teenage years, but apparently hers just kind of faded away with time. I don't really notice it on her at all.

glad to have helped you make the connection :)

that is really interesting - wonder why it is prevalent in celtic backgrounds. hmm.
If I ever was to study medicine I would chose dermatology. I've had my battles w/ eczema and its frustrating having a condition you have no knowledge of or how to "cure" it.
I think most skin conditions correlate with allergies. But why it reacts the way it does . . . who knows?

who knows is right! I think it would be wonderful to be able to help people overcome their health problems. medicine isn't the route for me this life (at least I don't think so) but I would still love to live my life dedicated to healing others. it's such an amazing profession!
