I saw Transformers today. It was pretty amazing. I love Michael Bay. I never watched Transformers growing up so I don't know how faithful the film was to the source material but the Transformers are kind of irrelevant. If Pearl Harbor was Bay's attempt to remake Titanic then Transformers is Bay's attempt to remake both Independence Day and Small

I didn't watch the show as a kid either. But I know the voice of Optimus Prime in the movie is the same guy that did the cartoon Optimus Prime too. So at least they put that in there for loyal fans. In my expierience Michael Bay is either hit or miss. He definetly hit well with this one.
