That's always the worst thing about brake work... getting the damned stuff APART. Make sure you really soak the hell out of it with penetrating oil and then let it sit for a while. Can also try heat with a blowtorch if you have one. Also try a breaker bar on the rachet handle and/or hitting it with a mallet to break the rust-freeze.

good luck!

hee!

we have a butane torch for food stuff, caramelizing sugar and whatnot... i appropriated it for the garage :) it helped with a few things but this spindle nut is driving me BONKERS.

maybe i should pick up a breaker bar. and a mallet, i used the hammer but i don't want to break the ratchet.

You still in Alberta? My dad has a portable (wheels! Yay!) air compressor and gun setup, but unfortunately its in Abbotsford.

I used it to clean the record players guts and the underside of the laptop's keyboard on a superlow setting. Handiest piece of luxury tool item I've ever seen.

I'm proud of you for doing it yourself, but I'm sorry about the spindle nuts. *hugs* I hope they give-way soon.

if you work around constructy-type guys, would they maybe have something you could borrow?

hope it all works! you know it will kick so many kinds of ass if you do it all yourself, that all the trouble will be worth it.

Drum brakes are a pain. I can do discs in my sleep, but I take drums to someone with a lift.

I second the breaker bar (don't buy the specialized tool, just slide a pipe over the ratchet handle), but too much torque can snap the bolts. Heat and oil can help them loosen, but it isn't a guarantee. I'm sure the manual covers it, but make sure the parking brake is off (as it sets tension on the rear brakes) and loosen the bleed valve to relieve the pressure.

Have fun! :-)

And, if you actually need air tools, you can rent them from your local Home Depot-type place.
