jaejoong brings yoochun along in his great escape.
roadtrip!jaechun. sickeningly fluffy, jaejoong and yoochun being stupid together and lots of jaechun love? :) but squeeeee i finally managed to write a full-fledged fic of them \o/! um, i'm really sorry if i screwed up the dynamics though ;; inspired by
with you around / yellowcard. (also, i will be forever grateful to anyone who's willing to rec me jaechun fic!)
well now i look at you
and you're still more
than i can take
you're like a slow song
starting to accelerate
★ "lets get out of here," is the first thing that escapes jaejoong's mouth when he sneaks into yoochun's room, lights in his eyes and a voice more serious than yoochun would've expected.
such surprises aren't suited for friday nights, thinks yoochun to himself grumpily, awoken from his nap. there's a glint in jaejoong's eyes, like whenever he comes up with a This Will Change The World And Everything Will Be All Right, Trust Me idea. it usually doesn't end well.
but jaejoong's smile is bright and his voice a little too eager. he clambers onto yoochun before yoochun can get out of bed and pokes him at the ribs. this triggers off a series of yelps as yoochun fights back valiantly, armed with pillows and a blanket for a shield. a man's pride is at stake, he thinks, making a lunge for jaejoong. jaejoong squeals, ("man up, jaejoong!") but retaliates with a flurry of jabs that more than made up for his lack of masculinity ("ow fuck, that hurt." "man up, park!") when it came to speaking.
"truce!" jaejoong finally shouts, breathless and laughing. yoochun raises his pillow triumphantly, letting out a strangled victory cry. last count: jaejoong vs. yoochun, 1:1. another draw. another thing they'll have in common.
when they settle, jaejoong's cheeks are flushed and yoochun's breath comes out short, but the idea of escape isn't lost on jaejoong. "bring your mixtapes," jaejoong smiles, breath tickling yoochun's nape. yoochun sighs and jabs him once more for good measure.
at night, yoochun fishes out his box of cds and contemplates on bringing ABBA just to piss jaejoong off. he had more or less signed up for The Spontaneous Adventures of Kim Jaejoong anyway, when he chooses this noble path of being the best friend. nothing will stop jaejoong once he made up his mind.
and who is yoochun to say no?
(he never did, when it came to jaejoong.
he couldn't.)
-
jaejoong's plans of getting away involved grand things - big, bold moves that neither of them would be able to make. ("how the fuck are we going to get to egypt, jae?" "but i like camels!")
in the end, jaejoong grudgingly settles for a road trip to destination: anywhere but here. yoochun tells his mother this. he ends up doing dishes for the rest of the weekend before his mother hands him a bottle of sun block. "you never know," she says, before heading off, mumbling about teenage boys and their rebellious phases.
it's a little strange really, when jaejoong shows up in a red convertible with shades and a million-watt smile, his bags flung carelessly at the back. it appears as if jaejoong's packed enough to last him for a month. yoochun gulps when jaejoong starts honking, in effort to get yoochun to hurry the fuck up. his mother very nearly whips out a ladle.
"jae," yoochun hisses, clambering onto the front seat. "you-"
"music!" jaejoong sings, pries yoochun's bag away from him and starts flipping through his cds, before letting out a gasp. his eyes widen in mock horror, fishing out a cd. "you did not," he makes a small retching noise, eyes narrowing. yoochun smiles, all too pleased with himself, until he finds the said cd plastered to his face.
"my, my, how could i resist you?" he croons, trying to swallow his grin as jaejoong shrieks to bohemian rhapsody to drown the tune out. he slams on the brakes hard when they hit a red light, and very nearly jabs the death out of his cd player just to stop the music. yoochun laughs and decides to give in, but only after the song ends. another minute of torture for jaejoong.
"i hate you," he grumbles, when ABBA is finally replaced with something else. they're nearing the end of the city now, yoochun realizes. he wonders where jaejoong's bringing him.
"nobody said it was easy," yoochun counters easily, laughing at jaejoong's pout. ABBA had always been his weak spot. they've been driving for awhile now, the sun scorching behind their backs as the roads drew on. at one point yoochun sticks out his finger, tracing the shape the wind makes to the sky, head raised and eyes squinting as he lets the music fill his veins. jaejoong beside belts a tune at the top of his lungs. ("and i was like FUCK YOUUUU!") it makes yoochun lose his I Am Wondering About My Life's Greater Purpose, or: How Not To Fall In Love With Your Best Friend expression immediately.
oh boy, he thinks, shutting his eyes as jaejoong tries valiantly to bleed his ears to death. it's rather scary if he thinks about it hard enough. the fact that even that, he's okay with. as long as he's with jaejoong, he realizes, everything else doesn't matter. he sighs dramatically, stealthily changing the song when jaejoong wasn't looking to ABBA just to hear him shriek a little more.
conclusion: park yoochun is truly fucked.
-
falling in love with jaejoong had never been in yoochun's bucket list at all. but somewhere along the line of being a best friend, it happened, and yoochun finds himself tumbling awkwardly down, down, down. too fast, too furious, too frightening.
(and it hurts more than ever, when it dawns upon him that jaejoong's probably never going to love him back. not the way he wants him to.)
-
the sun sets and they stop at a motel for the night. but that's cheating, jaejoong argues. he promptly shuts up when yoochun tells him about the back aches he'd get if he sleeps in the car. it's not the first time they've shared a room together, but it's the first since yoochun discovers his new found feelings for jaejoong.
so it gets awkward.
"you can have the bed," yoochun says, quickly crawling to the sofa before jaejoong can protest.
jaejoong frowns. he does not take this lying down.
"what the hell, yoochun?" jaejoong glares. "why can't we just share the bed?"
"uh," yoochun says lamely. because i'm afraid i might ravish you and accidentally suffocate you in your sleep that i have to bury your body near that grass patch the next morning. "back aches?"
jaejoong's eyes narrow. he pats the bed and glares at yoochun. "get in here park," he says, waving a pillow at him threateningly.
yoochun blinks, unsure of whether he should take up jaejoong's invitation. there's a limit to how far his self-control can hold after all. it takes him two seconds.
"okay," he says, wriggling his way into the blankets, earning an affectionate pat from jaejoong. jaejoong's chest is pressed against his back and his breath ghosting his neck. and yoochun knows he'd made the right decision. he missed this. it's been too long since they've been like that together - just them and their breaths to fill the silence. no one else but jaejoong and yoochun.
"hey yoochun?" jaejoong mumbles softly, forcing yoochun to roll over to meet jaejoong's eyes. he knows this voice. it's always when jaejoong's doubting something that it comes out.
(it frightens him sometimes, how much he could read jaejoong. yet, he could never when it came to things regarding him.)
"i wanted this too," yoochun says, easily finding the words jaejoong had wanted to hear. it's never difficult for yoochun when he needs to comfort jaejoong, somehow. he flashes a smile, and tries not to let his breath hitch when jaejoong snuggles closer. "mmm," jaejoong mumbles onto yoochun's skin, earning a laugh. yoochun has since long mastered the art of translating sleepy jaejoong speech.
"what are soulmates for?" yoochun grins, ruffling jaejoong's hair. it stings a little when he says it, but the feeling is quickly shoved away as yoochun forces himself into slumber.
"nnndghlkjfhg," jaejoong lets out a mild sound of protest. yoochun open his eyes and laughs again when he feels a pout pressed onto his skin. "you can fix your hair tomorrow," he says, deliberately ruffling jaejoong's hair again, earning a jab to his waist.
as long as he has jaejoong, yoochun thinks, he's fine.
probably.
-
they set off early next morning when the dew is fresh on leaves and the sun a soft glow on the horizon. soon, curiosity gets the better of yoochun.
"we are we going?" he blurts out as jaejoong revs up the engine. a laugh is all he gets as a response, before they head off once again. it scares yoochun sometimes when jaejoong sets off on missions like these, without knowing what they're actually going to do. but what scares him isn't that. it's how he's okay with it. how he's okay with everything.
"this song is so old," jaejoong frowns as the next song plays. and all my life i looked for you / for arms that i could fall into
"says the queen lover," yoochun hums, voice still scratchy with sleep. jaejoong visibly shivers, but yoochun doesn't catch the look he gets. "shit," he groans. "why can't i have your voice?"
yoochun laughs like he's heard this a million times over. "because you can't sing to yourself, can you?"
"in the showers!" jaejoong says defensively, hair frazzled from the wind. then catches himself, as if realizing how bad his comeback was. he raises the volume yet again, until the music is blaring against yoochun's ears. like it'll drown out their thoughts and jaejoong's embarrassment.
the day goes on like the previous, except punctuated with less silence. jaejoong eventually agrees to saves the day, and they sing till their voices are gone and yoochun's throat goes hoarse from all the laughter and melody. then jaejoong does an imitation of a cross between gerad way and a goat having a sore throat. it comes out worse and sends yoochun laughing so hard he'd think he would've turned into a puddle sooner or later.
yoochun lets out an ungracious snort when jaejoong moves on to imitating their homeroom teacher. "not someone we should be thinking about!" he yells amid the music. and jaejoong splutters then, says something unrefined that's drowned out by the music. it's then that yoochun takes the time to look, to really look at jaejoong like he's the only one for him (and he is).
jaejoong is like hearts sewn together by the seams - fragile, careless and spontaneous. it makes yoochun fall even harder, grabbing onto the tightropes to prevent himself from plunging straight down. it makes yoochun wonder at times if the strings holding jaejoong would ever break. and even if it does - what next? sometimes yoochun half-expects jaejoong to explode into a ball of flashing light. he never takes anything slow anyway.
then jaejoong turns to face him, full-blown smile on his face and eyes glimmering in the sunlight that yoochun just freezes. as if he's been caught doing something he shouldn't. it takes awhile before he gathers himself, enough to look like he's not hopelessly in love with his best friend. he flicks jaejoong on the forehead for good measure.
"hey!" jaejoong yelps. the car swerves dangerously. this makes yoochun question if he really should've done that in the first place.
but then jaejoong starts snapping his fingers to the next song and seizing the chance to tickle yoochun in between every beat that yoochun just forgets and lets himself go once again. to jaejoong.
it has always been to jaejoong.
-
yoochun has to play the role of the sympathetic and supportive best friend that at times, it gets a little tiring. he tries not to tell himself that he's jealous over jaejoong smiling at others the way he never smiles at him.
but he is.
-
"this is dumb," jaejoong grumbles, kicking the rear of his car viciously. yoochun winces for the car, and pats jaejoong on the shoulder.
"it would've come to a point like this sooner or later," he says. jaejoong sighs and presses himself onto yoochun's chest. "but this is no fun," he mumbles. yoochun fights the urge not to roll his eyes.
"jaejoong, it's just a petrol station."
"that's civilisation!" he points an accusing finger at the fuel tank. the staff appears mildly disturbed, and a little frightened of jaejoong's dramatic gesticulating. so yoochun decides it's high time to kidnap jaejoong to somewhere else while the petrol gets replenished.
yoochun heads traight for the alcohol once they've entered the convenience stall. "do you still have cash?" yoochun idly ghosts his fingers across a bottle.
"no booze," jaejoong mumbles, a little wistful. "can't drive straight."
yoochun pouts, but gives in eventually when jaejoong shoots him the puppy eyes.
"okay," he says, clearing his throat. "how about orange juice," he gestures to the cartons of oj stocked on the shelves. clearly it isn't a very popular choice.
"mmm," jaejoong mumbles, more interested at the multi-coloured jelly beans than anything else. yoochun stares, and gulps when jaejoong's glint returns to his eyes.
they leave with a full tank, some bottles of orange juice and too much jelly beans.
later isn't as awkward as it is spent mostly in the bathroom, yoochun fighting a stomachache.
-
at night, jaejoong demands some kind of compensation from stopping by the petrol station. yoochun slaps his forehead, but quietly agrees to it anyway. they pull up next to a field and lay their blankets out, back leaned against the car rear as they gazed at the stars.
it's silence all around, except for the faint chirping of crickets and jaejoong's munching on the obscenely bright jelly beans. "hey park," he mumbles in between chews. yoochun cocks his head towards jaejoong.
"if you were given a chance, where would you go?" jaejoong asks, genuinely curious. he stops chewing on his jelly beans and sets them down even, awaiting yoochun's reply.
yoochun shrugs. i wouldn't go anywhere, he thinks. this earns a huff from jaejoong at his non-committal response.
"look at the stars," yoochun sings instead, grinning, abruptly changing the subject. "look how they shine for you."
jaejoong makes a mild noise of embarrassment and buries his head in his blanket, as if he doesn't want yoochun to see the blush on his face. somehow the orange juice makes yoochun a little bolder, funnily enough, so he scoots closer and raises jaejoong's chin, sees the hesitant glimmer in his eyes.
"you know i love you so," he hums, tries not to think about how it's so very true after all. jaejoong splutters for a moment, and rolls over till he's lying on yoochun's shoulder, cheeks heated. "stupid park," he mutters, poking yoochun's cheek and sticks out his tongue. yoochun laughs at this, and launches into full song, lulling both of them to sleep.
-
in the middle of the next afternoon brings about an excited grin from jaejoong, who determinedly pretends to have forgotten yesterday's events. it unsettles yoochun, but he quickly lets it go moments after. "we're nearly there," jaejoong says, face painted with glee. yoochun tries very hard not to wonder whether jaejoong's taking him to some farm, from how they've been only seeing fields and fields of wheat since morning came about.
"whatever it is," yoochun says carefully. "just don't leave me here."
"but you'll make a good farmer," jaejoong laughs. "old macyoochun had a farm, e-i-e-i-o," he sings, though it comes out more like a half-giggle towards the end. yoochun feels that jaejoong's probably the only one that can turn a nursery rhyme into an insult.
"so that was your plan!" yoochun accusingly points his finger, laughing when jaejoong splutters.
"i'll never leave you behind," jaejoong mumbles, so soft that yoochun barely catches it amid the music. but he does.
(and i was falling hard, you were barely hanging on)
-
yoochun falls asleep towards the end of the journey. he dreams of losing his way through tall grass, of a missing jaejoong. no matter how he tries to escape, the grass ropes him in and jaejoong's nowhere to be seen. it makes him nervous, frightened even. when he is shaken awake with a start, he unconsciously sighs in relief when jaejoong's face is the first thing he sees.
"we're here," jaejoong says cheerfully, the wind drawing out his words. yoochun blinks, rubs his bleary eyes before he establishes his surroundings. a look to the left, and his breath catches in his throat.
"this," he points to the beach, quiet, secluded and strangely peaceful.
"i used to come here when i was a kid," jaejoong says softly, eyes brimming with nostalgia. he parks the car nearby and tugs yoochun out, eager. they clamber carelessly onto the sand, tossing their sandals away and heading straight for the sea.
jaejoong's eyes narrow then, and yoochun laughs, aware of what he's planning. he scoops up the water in his hands and splashes it all onto jaejoong, who retaliates by tugging yoochun straight into the water.
they emerge gasping for air, yoochun tickling jaejoong at the ribs for a weak attempt at a comeback. jaejoong squeals, and flings a handful of sand onto yoochun's shirt.
"run baby run," jaejoong half-sings, half-yells as he splashes water onto yoochun, cheeks flushed and eyes crinkling to a smile.
yoochun gathers himself, and shoves jaejoong straight into the water, only to be tugged in with him. they end up spluttering seawater over each other, limbs entwined and shirts clinging onto their skins.
"i'll never look back," yoochun murmurs, staring straight into jaejoong's eyes, glimmering a little with anticipation and search as well. then he brings their lips together. jaejoong gasps, but presses closer, deepening the kiss. it's a strange feeling yoochun gets when he realizes jaejoong isn't pulling away, but it's a happy one. like his heart is about to soar. when they pull out, yoochun gets a moment before he freaks out, and faces jaejoong's searching eyes.
"i, um-" yoochun stutters. "my, my, i could never let you go?"
jaejoong groans and shoves yoochun into the water yet again.
"you," jaejoong declares. "are an idiot."
"huh?" yoochun says, blinking stupidly, earning a dramatic sigh from jaejoong.
"seriously," he murmurs, pulling yoochun away from the sea. they're so close, yoochun realizes, heart racing and cheeks flushed.
"couldn't you think of a better way to confess?"
oh, yoochun thinks. oh.
jaejoong rolls his eyes. "you're hopeless." he says again, as if to reiterate his point, and pulls yoochun in and brings their lips together again.
yoochun sighs into the kiss, before pressing closer. jaejoong giggles and deepens the kiss, hands losing their way in yoochun's ebony locks as he shuffles close. when they pull out, yoochun sees lights in his eyes, like jaejoong's given a bit of himself to his heart, before flashing a shittingly huge grin and slowly backs away.
"my, my, how can i resist you?" he sings teasingly, then breaks into a run when he hears jaejoong's frustrated yell. it's awhile later that yoochun finally lets jaejoong tackle him and kiss him senseless yet again.
"stupid park," jaejoong mumbles affectionately. "what will i ever do without you?"
yoochun smiles, and presses closer. that's exactly what he wonders too.
(but it's not like he's ever going to really find out).
and now i want to
chase forever down
with you around
