Sam died on December 11, 1964 and "A Change is Gonna Come" was released on December 22, 1964. Sam was on RCA Records at the time; he was never on Motown. He wrote the song earlier in the year and was supposed to sing it on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show" on February 7, 1964, but never did.
It was an extra-sad time because of the seriousness of the song and that the details of Sam's death were hard to believe. (As well they should've been; the "official version" of his death was a farce.)
