Digital Camera Question ~ How to switch from internal memory to card memory

So a few weeks ago, the memory card in my digital camera got full, so I switched it to internal memory, which also filled up in a few days. So today I bought a new SD card for my camera, but it doesn't appear that my camera recognizes it cuz when I turn it on, I get a little "internal memory is full" reminder. Most cameras will recognize the card to be available when it's plugged in. There's usually not a switch.

Did you perhaps buy an SDHC or SDXC card instead of a plain SD card? They're not always interchangeable. Or, did you perhaps buy a card that's so large the camera can't format it? Look at your original card, and see what type of SD it is, then what size it is, and try to find an identical one.

Yeah, I think maybe I did buy a SDHC card instead of an SD card...I thought they were the same thing. Well, I'll take it back to Staples tomorrow and see if they can point me in the direction of the right card there. Thanks for the tip! :)
