I know why they fly in formation but how they know when to turn and so forth my only guess is that they can detect the change in air currents from the lead bird changing direction. Seeing as flying in formation creates a slipstream for the other birds to allow energy saving flight they could even be pulled slightly into it and just compensate by turning with the air current.

Or I could be wrong.
