While still listening to the messages from the morning, Sam led Annie out the castle and over the drawbridge. It felt a bit ridiculous even walking on the thing.It seemed operational, and he took careful steps on it, half feeling that it could rise up at any moment and send them both tumbling into the murky water below. And although the swans paddling calmly under them seemed to be enjoying themselves, a swim wasn't really on Sam's list of plans for the day. But then again, none of this had been.
The weather outside was pleasant, but there was a small breeze in the air that sent a chill down Sam's spine every time it blew by. He did his best to hide the fact from Annie, trying to appear tough and confident instead. He placed his hand lightly on the small of her back as he guided her back onto solid ground.
"This water is coming from somewhere... I think the girls last night were trying to follow a road. If we follow the water out of the area, it might be safer," he suggested, but with a tone that made it clear he had already decided.
