Barty was just finishing up with the enchantment on the room he wanted to keep from sight when he heard the knock on the door. He fully intended to collect everything he needed for more polyjuice potion because he wanted to cause trouble. It was, after all, how he had fun.
Not long after he'd taken up residence in the cabin, clothing started to appear in the closet. Not only in his size, but to his liking. He now had on a black jumper and some matching slacks. Even though it was warm outside, he always felt a bit of a chill. He sighed and made sure that the enchantment was complete before he walked to the door and opened it.
"You wanted something, cousin?" He wasn't surprised that Sirius had been able to find him. And that Sirius had been able to keep him from finding them, though he wasn't sure why he'd want to.
'No, I was out for a stroll, and thought I'd pop in for a spot of tea. Of course I want something. Why else would I be standing here?' he asked bitingly.
'It may please you to insufferability to know that I require your help,' he said, his voice tight. Yes, he definitely WOULD much prefer asking Snivellus for help. He'd been mulling the question of which would be preferable. Snivellus won out.
'Of course,' he added, in an icy tone, 'it IS in your best interest to provide said assistance,' his eyes glinting with a hint of cold amusement.
Barty stepped aside and motioned for Sirius to come in. "You might as well come inside to explain yourself." He moved away from the door and over to a recliner in the living room area before taking a seat.
"And why should I help you, cousin?" He picked at a bit of fuzz on his pants. Barty was a bit surprised at how calm he'd managed to become after coming to this place. Though he still had his rather insane moments, and he did have an unbearable urge to cause trouble, the craziness had subsided a bit.
"I mean.....after leaving me wandering in the dark with no form of protection against who knows what could have come after me out there, why would I possibly offer any assistance to you at all?" He didn't look at Sirius, kept his eyes on the spot where the bit of fuzz had been. His tone was cold and it took a lot to keep from screaming at Sirius to get out. He was amazed to find that he actually wanted to hear what his cousin had to say.
Sirius entered closing the door behind him and leaning against it. 'Always so melodramatic. Tell me, is that a trait Voldemort required of his followers? Well, before my godson finished him off once and for all,' he taunted.
'As for why? I would presume that you'd find it in your own best interest to ensure that my Wolfsbane is successful. Because if it's not, And remus changes... well, I can't always control him, cousin,' he hissed threateningly. 'He might escape, and bite someone. Someone he doesn't like,' he added. 'We certainly wouldn't want that.'
Barty nodded. He hadn't thought about a secure bin. That was a good idea. He'd have to make sure he had that at his own cottage.
"Once you've got that crushed and into the cauldron, you want to take the fluxweed and chop it finely." He looked over the book.
"This is the long way to make the potion, by the way. And if you don't really know what you're doing you can easily mess it up, like you did." He took a deep breath and let it out slowly. He wanted to agitate Sirius again but he knew that Sirius needed to be able to concentrate and he probably couldn't do that if he wanted to throttle Barty.
"It's not difficult for someone to mess this potion up, especially the way they have it written in the book. I've made some notes that will help you out, and it might even brew a bit faster than this claims." He made another note in the book, crossing something on the instruction list out completely and writing beside it.
Barty was right about Sirius' concentration. He chopped the fluxwed finely--that was one thing he WAS good at. Slughorn had been a stickler, and had inadvertantly helped Sirius by being so picky.
'Maybe when I'm more comfortable with this one, you can help me learn the easier way,' he said, assuming there was one since this was apparently the 'long' way.
"That's what the notes are for." He smiled a little as he watched him chop up the fluxweed.
"That's good enough. Don't want it too fine. Now, for the best results you need to mix the fluxweed in with the pond slime before you add it to the potion." He made a note of that in the book. That was something that he'd learned on his own and probably even Snape didn't know about that one. He'd made a few batches of the potion for a friend before he'd gone entirely crazy.
Sirius nodded. He wasn't one to question potions masters. They spent time with potions as he did with wand magic. Like Snape and Barty with potions, he knew tricks with his wand that weren't in any book.
He mixed the fluxweed and pond slime, nodding, impressed, when the two seemed to bond and alter into something slightly different. 'S'pose this was what Golpalott was talking about with that wretched third law,' he muttered.
Barty nodded and ran his fingers through his hair again. Second chances were something he was familiar with, but he usually botched it. Continued to be the horrible person everybody thought he was. In truth, he'd only managed to get in with the wrong crowed and managed to find someone that new how to exploit everyone's worst weakness. Barty cleared his throat.
"Yes, well. Um...." He tested the original batch of potion. He nearly gagged at the taste but he stepped back and wiped at his mouth.
"This one will be ready in about three weeks. The other one will take the normal amount of time to brew. Let me know if either of them turns blue or black in the next week. That'll mean something's gone wrong in the brewing. Supposed to stay this....bogey color." He nearly gagged again, shaking his head.
"How he manages to keep drinking this stuff I will never know." He ran his fingers through his hair again and sighed, knowing that he messed it up.
"Do you have a mirror? My hair must look atrocious."
Sirius nodded and pointed to the mirror. 'I suspect that he does because the effects are worse without it.
'I did have one question, though,' he said quietly. 'Apparently, one of the side effects is that it makes him ill for the duration of the month. Is there a potion that could help help him feel better?'
Barty nodded and started to walk over to the mirror. He stopped for a moment and scratched the back of his head.
"I might be able to come up with something. I'll look into it." He smiled a little, the first time he'd directed that expression toward his cousin in a very long time. Barty walked over to the mirror and stopped, eyes going wide.
"WHY THE BLOODY HELL DIDN'T YOU TELL ME I TURNED GREEN?!?!?!"
Sirius looked at him, amused. 'I did call you a Grindylow,' he said. 'Grindylow are green.' He bit back a smile, knowing that Barty wasn't finding this as amusing as he was.
