Annie massaged the knot in her neck, taking a moment to lean back from the pile of books and papers scattered before her. It was probably close to daylight, or so her internal clock was telling her, but she knew she'd never get to sleep even if she took herself off to bed. Worry (along with his good friend, Guilt) had been keeping her awake at all hours ever since she'd run into her former DCI, and questions had plagued her while she'd lain awake. Unable to abide simply tossing and turning (and replaying what had happened between her and Gene over and over in her mind), she found an unoccupied library and started to list and cross-reference and take notes as though she was researching for a case.
After two solid hours, however, all her work had left her with nothing more than dozens of charts, graphs, arrows, timelines, and doodles - not a one of which made any sense. Dead gardners, dead unicorns, time travel, resurrection - nothing added up. She wanted to put her head down and cry, but that was even more counter-productive than tossing and turning in bed.
At last, when Annie was no longer able to read for the words swimming in front of her strained eyes, she got up to brew herself some tea - or find something a bit stronger.
