Donna smiled at Edie. "Ready, then?" Without waiting for an answer, she stepped forward and pushed the door inward. It swung cleanly and neatly open revealing a rustic stone kitchen. A fire was dying in the hearth and scattered across several wooden surfaces were the signs of food preparation: tomatoes left half-chopped, a broth of some sort cooling over the embers, several balls of dough left to rise under tea towels. Whoever had been here had left in a hurry.
Along one wall - the outside wall - was a door that could be opened all the way or only as a gate along with a few shuttered windows Donna guessed were more form than function. She turned back, looking at the open door skeptically. It probably wasn't best left ajar, so she pulled it closed.
"Well, we've made it then." Donna announced, feeling somewhat more cheerful than she had all day. She realized she had no way of telling time as her mobile refused to work, so she figured they'd do it the old-fashioned way: they'd just leave when they were tired of waiting.
