With some development and cosmetic work, you could heat the floor of a house with something like this. The only drawback would be going for a walk in the woods every day with a shopping bag and pruning clippers to get the fuel.
I lived for a little while in a house in England that was fireplace heated. I really prefer central heat -- rather than hot water bottle night -- but taking some of the pressure off the oil tank would be worth a bit of effort.

Got a house! My current mental plan is a five-inch x eight-foot column -- much of it heat exchanger -- vertical feed, side venting. If the exit gas temperature is low enough, I'll have more flexibility for getting it out of the house. Ideally, it'd be like venting a clothes dryer. Building one and sparking it up replaces the math of figuring out how it works. Possible option: fins.

Very nice. ~Please~ make sure your carbon momoxide monitor works, ok? We don't want to lose a community craftsman!
Speaking of which - what are the minimum requirements for a whip to be able to crack? Raven has one of his Samhain ritual characters needing to use a whip, and I am sort of in charge of finding one. (I don't do singletails yet, but that is on the menu probably for spring. Although I have bottomed.) Any advice welcome.

With a bit of practice, some cord on the end of a stick with a cracker on the end will crack. Why doncha borrow one of my whips. I hadn't planned on going to this one -- me and the dead have issues -- but if you like, I can come down there before everything gets started and give you a quick lesson in cracking.
Monitor all plugged in and fired up. However, in the very worst case -- where my venting fails and the monitor lies -- the fire will die before I do. This version really needs continuous attention.
