Thank you! I've actually been struggling a little bit lately, as far as style goes - like, I feel I've been a bit too impatient with the writing process in general, and it shows. x.x This is one of the longer things I've written recently, which is unfortunate because it isn't that long at all. I think my biggest weakness is that I work primarily on the 'inside' of characters, and even unconscious reaction between them, but I'm terrible with plot and structure within a story T.T
Sorry, that's a bit of a long response x.x I'm glad you liked this, though.
I really loved the prose here, and I liked this line especially:
Here he smiles in this odd way, like he shouldn't find something appealing, but does; and then he raises his eyes and there's a bone-deep sorrow around the soft, thousand-year-old laughter soaked into them, smoothing the edges of his voice.
Not enough fics address the issue that Aang is the Avatar and has a thousand years of memories so he is twelve and a kid yet he's not. And the question of whether other people are reincarnated and what that means is something I've pondered myself. (I especially think it may have played out between Roku and Sozin as well.)
I'm in art school, and one the major things I struggle with is theme within art work. I'm a decent artist, but I'm a much better writer :( Anyway, what I've been working with lately is the idea of a soul, like a body, breaking down into its separate components upon death. It's sort of like the "next step" in the idea of reincarnation, I guess - or, another step in equating the body with the soul. I've sort of been toying with it. It's a little depressing, though, to think that "there is nothing after this". X.x I have a lot to say about the whole thing, but I won't take up too much space here. Another problem of mine - being concise. X.X;;;
Anyway, I'm glad that you liked it. It was SO WEIRD not writing in present tense. :(
In the Orthodox Jewish tradition there are something like three souls... a spirit that does end with the body (which I guess is like the consciousness/life force), and then one that has an afterlife, and reincarnation is also possible... so it's an interesting concept to me too. (I'm explaining it pretty badly though.)
(I know my style isn't much like yours, but I went through a phase where I pretty much only wrote in the present tense and then I had to try not to, so I can relate.)
Seriously, I live in present tense. I don't know what it is, but I really have a thing for it. I've known people who actually refuse to read it, though, which is annoying. Anyway, I'd like to see it be more fifty-fifty when it comes to past and present tense, so I contribute what I can.
Another thing I have a weirdo attraction to is second person POV. I had a really shitty creative writing teacher once who was like "second person? i don't believe there is such a thing" and I'm like, are you fucking kidding me. She didn't even require using iambic pentameter for sonnets. I loathed her. :(
I'll have to do some research on jewish soul theory, thank you <3
again with the reading of your fic long after you've posted, but - HI!!! this also is awesome - your writing style just blows me away, and this is so packed with emotion. ah, the bittersweet angst! i read it twice through just to get that feeling again. (your aang is so mischievous in this piece, it's great!) :D
Thanks :) I really appreciate the comments - even late ones! In fact, I might like those more, since it is like a present or a surprise when you least expect it. It makes me want to start posting fanfiction again <3
