series: Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
name: Monkey (alias, real name unknown)
sex: M
age: Unknown, mid to late twenties
race: Human
height: Unknown, between 6’ and 6’5”
weight: Unknown, likely between 180 - 190 lbs
canon point: Prior to his and Trip’s arrival at the Mech Factory wastes to find Pigsy
previous cr: Porting from Hellpointe. Major CR with Milo Thatch from the Atlantis animated move, Quorra from Tron: Legacy, and Miata from Claymore are the most notable. He is largely unchanged in disposition, but is less likely to be as gruff as he would otherwise.
Upon his arrival, Monkey literally ran into another person while he was looking for his proper-world companion, Trip. Shortly there-after, the town was buried in snow and he spent most of his time just trying to stay warm in his home, and subsequently got into a scuffle with Miata while the town was flooding when the snow melted, which lead to an odd sort of father-daughter relationship. Things carried on as routine for a period of time until Trip arrived and he spent the majority of his time watching out for her until she left again, which was a bit of a blow to him, but he tucked any feelings he had about the situation and once again, things carried on largely as routine until he left the town.
The forced social nature of the town has made him a bit more easy going and less likely to snap at someone or brush them off right out of the box, though he is as untrusting as he’s always been, due to general life experience.
history:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enslaved:_Odyssey_to_the_West#Plot personality: Gruff and very much a loner, Monkey has little use for people unless he requires food or other supplies. Unless of course, we’re talking about Trip, but she is a special case. In the end, he has little use for others, preferring to keep to himself and often using threats and insults to keep the people he meets at much more than arm’s length. This isn’t to say he hates people, but he doesn’t readily trust them since the people he meets that don’t live in a community of some tend to try to kill him, due to the nature of the world they live in. He won’t necessarily withhold information, either, but he knows what is and isn’t too much. He just gives the information he needs to get by and to get people to shut up.
It’s obvious that he’s much smarter than you’d think at a glance, though it’s less book smarts and more practical knowledge gained from experience. This is generally displayed by his bemused looks when Trip is using her wrist mounted computer, contrasted against his ability to find ways into inaccessible areas via climbing and other means that most people would never be able to manage. Monkey is also very much a realist, making a point of more often than not only trusting his own ability (which he has great confidence in), and never setting his hopes too high. He’d much rather accept that things are as they are and move on with his life than lose himself in the “what could be” of optimism.
He’s not always the calmest individual either, being easily frustrated by anything he finds unnecessary or by an inability to act when the situation requires it, and he goes so far as to scold Trip for the latter early on in their journey together. It should come to no surprise that he also has a sarcastic streak a mile wide and a bit of a dry wit, readily taking a jab or two at people should the opportunity arise.
All told though, Monkey isn’t inherently good or bad, he simply is what he needs to be to get by. Slight him and he won’t hesitate to pop your head off of your shoulders. Treat him like a human being and he’ll do the same in return, and doing so enough will earn you his trust and loyalty. Maybe even a compliment or two.
abilities/powers:
Being human, Monkey has no true special powers. However, he is extremely strong, fighting with his own brand of martial art. So strong, in fact, that he is easily able to rip the arms clean off human-sized mechs. He is also extremely capable with his staff, able to use it to beat mechs into scrap within a few seconds. The staff itself is capable of firing bolts of plasma energy, as well as energy that at the very least can stun a mech. However, the charges for each kind of energy are limited. The stun energy can also be charged along the length of the staff, unleashed in a powerful melee strike that will stun whatever the staff hits, as well as enemies within a small radius. The staff is also capable of shrinking down to a portable size through an unknown mechanism, always being stored on Monkey’s right gauntlet when not in use.
His gauntlets also do more than simply add power to his blows, they are also capable of creating temporary personal energy shields that can protect him for a short period of time. They are not without their limits, however, only being able to focus the shield in one direction at a time, and they are very much personal shields. The shields are capable of protecting Monkey, and Monkey alone.
The slave headband he wears is both an advantage and disadvantage to him all at once. It provides Monkey with a HUD that displays vital information within his field of vision (such as shield strength and remaining plasma and stun charges), as well as the likely head protection a piece of metal stuck to one’s forehead would provide. That said, it is capable of killing Monkey, as it is electronically tapped into his brain. Should Trip die, Monkey will die as well.
He also possesses a piece of technology that he calls the “Cloud.” It is effectively an expanding personal hoverboard that creates a solid energy field that Monkey can stand on. It only works in certain areas where conditions are right, these areas most often being over or around water. It does not grant him flight by any means, but it allows him to traverse any surface, including water, should environmental conditions provide.
The technology aside, Monkey is also a skilled climber, easily living up to his namesake, if not surpassing it in some areas. While incapable of anything you’d be able to call parkour, he can make incredible leaps from a standstill or even while hanging from a very small ledge.
first person sample:
[There’s a moment of static before Monkey’s voice comes through.]
The hell is this? This doesn’t look like that stupid town I was just in.
[A door is heard being opened.]
If this is a glitch happening while I’m in that damned town, I’m not gonna be happy. If this is someplace different, I’m just gonna be flat out pissed.
And where the hell is my stuff?!
third person sample:
Quick and quiet, just like he always did it. Monkey held his staff firmly in his right hand, resting it along his back as he scurried from hiding place to hiding place. If one of those mechs noticed him, he’d be ready. Surprises were not his friend, so he needed to be ready, if he wanted to make it out of this alive. This headband was coming off, without him dying, so he needed to get up high and clear things out so Trip could get through. Besides, the sooner they got out of this scrap heap, the better. He hated being around mechs, since they tried to kill him more often than most humans did.
It wasn’t too much to ask for; getting his life back, was it? He mussed silently over this as he clambered up the remains of a building. Though it would just be going back to wandering aimlessly. But that was the safest thing, right? Staying away from the remains of the old world, not trusting people…
That thought gave Monkey pause, and he glanced back to where Trip was hiding. While he might technically be at her beckon call, he did trust Trip. Didn’t he? Well, he had to, on the base level of things, but aside from that he had to admit he did. She’d saved his ass in the past, and chances were pretty good she’d do it again. This whole thing was a matter of life and death for both of them, when it came down to it.
Though that left Monkey to wonder just how she was holding up, now. He’d spent the majority of his life on his own after his parents died, so it was easy for him to look at such slaughter and move on with things. For Trip, everything she’d known had just gone up in smoke, and she had to accept the fact that he’d been right about the slavers. And while she didn’t seem to be suffering from shock anymore, he was still concerned. It was in part due to his livelihood being tied to hers, but at the same time… Monkey was genuinely concerned. He remembered how the deaths of his parents hurt, but that was a long time ago, and he’d had time to heal. A fresh wound like Trip’s was harder to work around, even with the whole vengeance angle going on.
Either way, now wasn’t the time for any kind of deep introspection. He’d gotten to where he wanted to be without being noticed, so it was time for the fireworks to begin. With practiced ease, Monkey steadied himself and focused, lining up his first shot.
“Alright Trip, distract them on three…”
