What do people normally do here for birthdays? Are normal parties okay or is it better to go somewhere?

It was my friend's birthday recently but we just had a small party for him at our cottage.

Nothing too much. We just had cake, ice cream, and a couple of drinks.

Mostly. I think he'd feel better if he was expecting something even if we didn't tell him what the party would be.

I...don't know yet. [And she sounds a little sheepish.] It depends on how many friends my brother has here.
