Baekhyun sinks into his window seat with his cell phone in hand, and quietly waits for the plane to take off. Baekhyun likes the window seat because he finds comfort in the privacy provided by the window in the side of the plane - he would like to be able to stare into space without being judged.
Sitting in his favourite seat, his duizhang’s face forms in his mind. Duizhang always lets him have the window seat. Baekhyun doesn’t particularly enjoy plane rides, but he finds they become much more bearable when he has his favourite window seat and favourite person next to him. Baekhyun smiles, duizhang always has a way of comforting him, even when they are not touching.
Baekhyun calls Kris ‘duizhang’. He tells people it’s because the other members call him that anyway, but he calls Kris duizhang really because he knows Kris likes to be called that, and he secretly likes the way Kris looks at him like he is the silliest kid he’s ever known when he says ‘duizhang’ in the lousy exaggerated Chinese accent he specially practiced for Kris. Baekhyun actually feels loved and he hopes Kris only looks at him that way and no one else.
Baekhyun says ‘duizhang’ sometimes when he lies in bed and Kris says something, hinting at wanting to be ‘more’ with him. He says ‘duizhang’ not because he does not want to be the ‘more’ that Kris talks about, but because he thinks that Kris doesn’t really mean what he says - he hasn’t considered the consequences. He says ‘duizhang’ to remind Kris of who he is, who they are, and what they are supposed to be. He says ‘duizhang’ to keep them grounded, even when all he wants is for Kris to never let him go.
Baekhyun calls Kris ‘hyung’ sometimes though, times when he feels like being a kid, times when he needs someone to lean on. Some nights Baekhyun seeks Kris out beneath his sheets with a small ‘hyung’, and presses himself against Kris. Kris’ arm around him feels like his security blanket, providing him the warmth and comfort that he needs. Baekhyun doesn’t say anything, and Kris doesn’t ask what’s wrong. They lay in silent companionship until Kris slips into slumber, his hand warm on Baekhyun’s own. Baekhyun leaves.
Kris has large hands, Baekhyun thinks when Kris pats his face. His hand covers the entire side of Baekhyun’s face and it always takes Baekhyun so much effort to not close his eyes and lean into Kris’ touch. Baekhyun likes it when Kris pats his face, especially when he does it in front of their members, in front of their fans, but he likes it best when Kris pats his face when they are in bed together and Kris looks at him with stars in his eyes and says you’re the best I’ve ever known.
Kris likes to say that he’ll always be around if Baekhyun ever needs someone to talk to. But Baekhyun cannot bring himself to believe it because honestly isn’t that what people say in their half-hearted attempts to comfort sad people? The thing about Kris though, is that he says it like he means it. He stares into Baekhyun’s eyes with so much sincerity and promise when he says things like that and that is why Baekhyun is scared. Baekhyun can never believe in promises because those that made him promises always ended up breaking them. But he looks into Kris’ eyes, takes a deep breath and tells himself to trust in Kris just a little more.
The cabin crew’s voice brings Baekhyun back to the present and he tears his eyes away from Kris’ face on his cell phone, relaxes into his favourite window seat and thinks of walking into Kris’ arms when he arrives back at the dorm.
