I don't know how many of you have been following this story, but here's a quick recap:

James Kim, a senior editor at c|net and his family were traveling from San Francisco to Oregon for Thanksgiving.  The Tuesday after Thanksgiving, neither he nor his wife made their appointments and their family and friends began worrying.  A massive search was ( Read more... )

I don't know, sweetie. That story is pretty darn horrific and they just love to stockpile the news full of sad, sad stories like that so that the people who watch the news will feel more fortunate that their lives are not total and utter disasters.

You also have to take into account that it was an entire family and they froze to death (or starved to death), which is a big deal in our country as that just doesn't happen every day.

I kind of understand your point of view regarding the iniquity of the matter. My neighbor's father disappeared in the Oregon mountains (he had senile dementia) and was never found. No news stories about him.

The wife and daughters were rescued on Monday. They found the trail the father followed earlier today, but I just read that he left at 8am on the seventh (?) day and said he'd be back by 1pm...something must have happened that same day and he never came back. Today would've been the 11th day.

It's not readily apparent. Though, every article I've read mentions that the road he ended up taking is not ploughed in the winter and it seems they got stuck because of snow drifts.
