So, last month, a soul giant passed away. No, I'm talking about Rudy Ray Moore (although, RIP, Dolomite) - but Levi Stubs.
I've never been the biggest Motown fan on earth. I mean, yes, I love Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye (I'm not dead inside) but the large majority of Motown tracks were too ... pretty, too clean for me. I need some damn grits in ( Read more... )

Wow, a great mix and I couldn't agree more. I always thought that, at heart, Levi was more of a Southern soul-belter than a Motown pop-soul singer. He could've made some great records with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, just a good band and That Voice.

Yeah, every time I hear 'Ask the Lonely' I imagine what it would sound like with the Booker T. crew.

Slowed down to almost a funeral march beat and - instead of the Motown choir-like background singers - a strong hammond organ playing a counterpart to Levi's vocals.

Personally, I will love him forever thanks to Little Shop of Horrors. I will add "Mean Green Mother from Outer Space" to MY Levi Stubbs playlist. :)
