oooo yikes. maybe he'll understand that that sort of thing happens to everyone every once in a while. But then again, you haven't been there for very long so that doesn't look good. Though I think it would look better if you were straight forward and admitted your mistake "I'm sorry. This is uncharacteristic. I know how important it is for me to be here on time it, won't happen again." and told him first even if someone else doesn't tell him. That way he'll at least know that you are honest and concerned about your job. Maybe you can offer to stay a half hour longer than you usually would stay. i dunno...
I don't think you should tell. If you are confronted then you apologize and be professional about it and hope for the best, but I don't think it would necessarily be better for you if you preemptively told your boss what happened.
