Did you listen to this week's This American Life? Ira Glass interviews an undecided voter whose views basically illustrate your point. He wants to vote for Bush because he feels that Bush has more integrity and will stand up for his beliefs (regardless of the fact that this man shares none of Bush's opinions). A candidate has to show conviction. Without conviction, no one will believe that they are competent to run our country.
There's a lot to be said about this election being a referendum on Bush rather than anything to do with Kerry. Maybe Al Gore missed the boat with that in 2000, the chance to make the election about Clinton and the good economy rather than allowing Bush to define himself as a blue-collar everyman. We'll never know now. I'll go listen to that TAL episode though.
Yeah, I remember that turnip soup line. I also like his repeated, "...and it all comes down, to O-HI-O." And oh yeah, fuck the electorate if all they look for is goddamn conviction. Any retard can have conviction - hell that's what got Jesse Ventura the job, and look how well he did?
Yeah, he kept repeating Ohio over and over again, like a mantra. "Ohio, O-HI-YO. Ohio. Down to the wire here. Dan Rather, here with you, CBS News, back in a minute. Oh-Hi-Yo."
(About the Kerry campaign trying to retain composure in the face of overwhelming odds) "It's like a swan, who keeps every feather perfectly arranged, but those legs are kicking like crazy under the water."
My favorite Dan Rather quote of the night was(speaking to Kerry's campaign manager about losing Ohio), "I know you would rather run through a fire wearing a gasoline suit." That one just dumbfounded me.
