I can't remember if I already asked you if you had watched Smoke Signals. Alexie's a favorite of mine, although of course some people take issue with him and his portrayal of native American culture. But I think the same would be true of any other person in a similarly successful position.
Ahh, books. I'm partway through Me Talk Pretty One Day (David Sedaris), which I heard in part on audio tape a while ago. It's quite different as text, although re-reading it is making me a bit impatient to get on to my next couple of books.
I have seen Smoke Signals. It was through that movie and the short story This is what it means when you say Phoenix, Arizona (or something like that) that introduced me to Alexie.
I haven't heard any critiques of Alexie's work outside of a few book reviews. I'd be interested to read them.
I've never read any Sedaris, although I love his articles on NPR. You'll have to tell me how it is.
I suggest getting the same translation as I read. It was by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. I don't know how the translations differ, but this one was well done, so voila.
