I know that in my neighborhood (Maple-Ash, next to campus but not lots of undergrads), most people just put out signs and don't post information anywhere else, so the most effective strategy is to actually drive around and note information. That said, rent in this area is a bit more pricey--if you look further to the west, things get cheaper. But I'd concentrate on the west and south sides of campus, and would definitely cruise through the neighborhoods looking for For Rent signs--it's worth it.
