It was simple. She was going to school, graduate and then get a job. It was all mapped out, but it wasn't that simple anymore and it hadn't been for awhile. If she was honest about it, the map and plan fell apart somewhere during that summer in Europe. Not the one with her mother, but the one with Emily. It made her realize how much she wanted to crave her own independence, how much she no longer wanted to do what everyone else told her to.
And then she met Logan.
Anyone could argue that she got her independence the day she moved to Yale, but in her heart, her independence was gained when she jumped off scaffolding holding nothing more than Logan's hand and an umbrella. When her feet touched the ground, she snapped back to reality and she realized that while she wanted to make her parents and grandparents happy, she wanted to be happy first.
She enjoyed school, the paper and her friends, but she was missing something. She started to doubt the relationship with Dean, if that's what you called it. She started to see that she could be happier without him. She thought that call would be the hardest she would ever have to make, but he seemed to accept it and she hoped he would move on.
She didn't do anything crazy like drop out of school or drastically alter her classes; she just started to live a little more. She went to more parties, she hung out with new people but most of all she started to have fun. She started to spend more and more time with Logan too, the almost instant dislike she had of him fading into a blurry memory that resembled the bottom of an empty glass of milk.
During the summer between her second and third year she spent more time with Logan, they traveled to Martha's Vineyard and walked along the beach, they went shopping in New York and they visited the lights of Vegas. They spent a lot of time together all the while acting as if they were friends only, nothing more.
At the end of the summer they went back to Martha's Vineyard, she called it a symbolic gesture, returning to the place where it all started. They were walking along the beach when it happened. She would deny why it happened later and blame it on the smell of the ocean breeze, pushing all thoughts that she was falling for him to the side.
She kissed him there and it wasn't a small peck on the side of the cheek for friendship. She ran her lips over his jawbone first, working her way to the outer edge of his smile. She hesitated just a little before pressing her lips against his, slowly sticking her tongue out, seeking entry. She ran her hands up the back of his neck, pulling his face closer towards her.
When she realized what she had done, she stepped back and smiled. She reached out and took his hand in hers, continuing their walk along the beach, not wanting to talk and silencing all protests he had.
Again, big ups to
