ok so supernatural? absolutely fantastic. definitely worth the download. and CROSSOVERS FTW! you might throw up at one point (i seriously gagged) but it's so amazing.

anyway, just because i don't want people jumping down my throat for downloading it, i'm going to give a small lesson on ratings.

television ratings are basically a big jumbled cluster fuck. there's no way to track every single household and every single television in america (because you have to take into account that many families have more then one tv and watch more then one program. it may have been easy to do in the 60's when everyone had one tv, but not anymore). because of this, a certain percentage of households in america are given a box which records the ratings and sends them off to nielsen, which puts together the ratings.

so basically, if you don't have a "box", then it doesn't matter if you watch the show or not. because it's not going to hurt the ratings either way.

now if you DO have one of these boxes, then watching the show (or hell any show) on tv tonight is definitely going to help the ratings of the show.

the problem with this system is that it's randomized. you can't just say "HEY GIVE ME A BOX", it's illegal. so, most likely with shows like supernatural, which is on a not-a-big-three station (aka not abc, cbs, or nbc), the ratings aren't going to be as high because the families with "the box" don't watch it.

but now in the digital age, there IS a way to help out these ratings. iTunes is seriously helping these shows, as has streaming online on their websites, because the networks finally realized that they have the fanbase, just not the fans with the boxes for ratings.

having streaming downloads and downloads on iTunes now helps the "digital ratings". which, in turn, help the show. because the networks see how popular the shows are, not only tv wise, but internet wise, and it keeps the shows going.

for example, and this has to do more with music, britney's "gimme more" is number one in the digital ratings from the downloads it's gotten on iTunes. if this wasn't a big deal, then television programs that talk about top music wouldn't even mention it, they would just mention billboard and hot100, etc.

so downloading supernatural on iTunes, whether you watch it or not, is really helping the show more then it is hurting it, especially if you're not a nielsen household.

don't believe me? how nielsen ratings and 'the box' work (if that link doesn't work, then go here, click on "faqs" then click on "our research".

i'm leaving this unlocked, so if you all want to pass this around to people who are all "OMG DON'T DOWNLOAD!!!", feel free :)

eta: also? iTunes doesn't just magically get the episode. the CW gives it to them. so it was their decision to put it up. i don't think a network would do something like that if it felt it would hurt them.

i learned you, supernatural
