My social studies literacy course is kicking my ass with all its work, but I'm learning a lot that I can use next year with my regular level students ( Read more... )

Was he the kid we saw on the news who died on the river on the hot day last week? It was all over the news up here, but it never made sense what happened. That's really sad. How did you guys have such a huge drop in students? That seems more than normal for dropouts and stuff, but I may be thinking idealistically about how many stay in vs dropout.

We know you'll find your groove with your SS literacy course and ace it! It's just hard to get into taking a class when you've been teaching (Brian's having that trouble now taking classes to get/keep his license).

Yes, and since then, stories keep getting passed around town that make the circumstances sound even stranger. He couldn't swim, so why would he jump in? Why did the guy on the boat keep going? Why did people on the island tell people on the opposite shore that Philip wasn't with them. It's just all really crazy. Graduation was really sad. Kids just boohooed through the whole thing.
This group of seniors had a TON of kids drop out. Something like 40% dropped out, and another 20% transferred to the community college to get their GED. This was a very unmotivated group. So, yes, way more dropouts than normal.

Remind me, is he somewhere near Raleigh? He's teaching middle school, right?

Wow, so strange! I hope at least some answers will eventually come out, if nothing else at least for his parents ( ... )

yes, the generation gap is already beginning to appear after only seven years! a "normal" drop out rate should be somewhere around 20%, but ours is much higher. kids in general just seem unmotivated. despite the fact that it is becoming even more necessary for people to have a high school diploma to have a job (even McDonald's requires you to have one!!!), it hasn't sunk in yet for these kids.

I joke that I create a fertile environment in my room. I had four girls all pregnant spring semester a year ago, and this spring I had three.
