More than half of the (enormous!) CA state budget goes to education. And then add in the enormous property taxes people pay out here. Where does all that money really go? Obviously not teachers...
Yeah, one of many reasons to get angry about it all. In all fairness, I still feel it's a great career to pursue. I am starting to feel that I could much further into this career, if I felt it was right for me. After all my experience in it, I'm starting to rethink about how I feel being in a classroom environment in general.
The basic structure of a public school classroom is thirty students to one teacher. That alone has obvious flaws that time and time again make me wish to simply have one or two T.A.'s in a classroom at any given time. Because I work as a tutor, I see the benefits and rewards for working with students one on one, or even as a one-to-three ratio. So it's very hard to be into something that I already feel has so many flaws, it's hard to really enjoy the art of teaching if I all do is become a babysitter more than an educator.
I have a lot of ideas collected that I'm going to look into, so I'm not panicking yet.
I was going to suggest maybe an older audience would help. At least my observation was there was less babysitting in high school and virtually none in college.
One thing to keep in mind is that your reward may not be obvious (either financially or personally) but at least in my experience I hold most of my elementary school teachers in high regard today. So whether or not you feel immediate satisfaction, I can assure you there will be some gratitude even if it isn't expressed.
