Technique Tutorial
Learn to make the following icon:
Step 1
First, create your base. No, not a photo, but a base colour. I chose the colour #08839D for my base, however you can use any colour you want.
Step 2
Then add this texture by
loveicon . Crop/resize (I didn't, so if you like the size as it is you can keep that) the texture to your base. I also added some extra random scratch textures (my mix of textures was turned out like this.)

Step 3
On a new file, crop the photo you want. A close up pic won't do, you need a pic that you have the ability to cut out and see a decent amount of their body (eg: something like what I've used). Chose any type of coloring that best suits your photo and your application. I used PS CS for this tutorial, so I used this tutorial.

Step 4
Copy and paste your photo to your original document. Cut around its background, ie. around the figure. I suggest leaving a small boarder of the background around the figure

Step 5
Now for some decoration on top. For the occasion, I created this texture/pattern to use. Feel free to enlarge/decrease the size.

Use this and/or this texture (set to lighten or screen) made by me. Arrange where you want, feel free to rotate, etc.

Add some tiny text manually or from a brush/texture.

Duplicate the photo of your person and bring it to the top. Desaturate (ctrl+shift+u), and transform (ctrl+t) smaller. Move it a bit to the side and set to lighten.

And your done! Remember; if you don't want to include one particular step, you don't have to. Be creative, you don't have to do everything word from word, but if you want to you can do that too. If you want to use the final icon feel free. Id love you see your results!
