It was as if something had just broken inside of her. It was Bill’s night with Barb and she didn’t want to intrude. But she really needed someone to hold her. She grabbed the baby monitor, tears streaming down her face, and ran over to Nickie’s house. She knocked on the sliding glass door and waited for her to let her in.
“Margene, it’s ten o’clock at night and the boys are sleeping so be quiet,” Nickie said in a huff, opening the glass doors.
“I’m sorry, I just…need a hug,” Margie said pitifully.
That’s when Nickie noticed the tear stains on her sister wife’s cheek.
I’ll take a deep, deep breath
“What’s wrong?” Nickie asked gently, showing Margene a softer side that she had never seen before.
Margie sniffled and then wrapped her arms around Nickie, dropping the baby monitor onto the floor. Nickie was rigid at first, but relaxed into the hug and pulled Margie close against her.
“Tell me what’s wrong,” Nickie said softly, playing with Margie’s soft brown hair.
Twenty years sinking slowly
Can I trust you? But I don’t want to
“I don’t know, nothing really, don’t you ever have one of those times when you just can’t stop crying?” Margie asked through her tears.
“No, not really,” Nickie replied.
Margie smiled a little bit. That was her Nickie.
“That’s ok, I guess not everyone has those moments, but I feel much better now,” Margie said, pulling away.
Nickie shook her head. Sometimes she didn’t understand Margene at all. Margie lifted her head and gave Nickie a soft kiss against her lips.
“Goodnight,” she said, picking up her baby monitor and leaving.
