Travel, poverty and fear

I'm going all over the country at the moment doing rural and regional consultations. Some of it is with Skippy (when I need a driver for areas which would be otherwise hard to get to), but some of it is on my own.

People often wonder how it is that I travel so extensively and fearlessly. "Fearlessly" is complicated, and not always true. It comes ( Read more... )

I think you win here, because to you, life is not about living as a disabled person, but (just) living.

I really noticed that on Saturday and it was a very pleasant surprise, because you are not a burden to travel with.

Aw, thank you! You made it a *lot* easier by not making it about my disability. Both you and Sarah both just got it in a way which is rarer than it should be ( ... )

The PSA's have a lot more of a guardianship attituted towards helping blindies than the Melbourne people. I have to cast aspersions about the relative ability of Perth blind people in genearl in order to explain that away.

I think particularly the ones at Perth and Vic Park are specifically trained to have eyes on us and make sure we're OK. I know it's annoying, but it's understandable to, if you think of the context.

Whereas, say at Cockburn or Murdoch, you could probably die there, and they only seem to check tickets, and never hassled me.

Yeah, I noticed it in the city too. However, it seemed understandable there because I think there's still a bit of work being done on the new platforms; not everyone knows what's going on. This was none of the stations you've mentioned.

Wonder how much of it is what Transperth have been told to do by the Association?

While you seem ever conscious of disability, you do not make your life a disabled life. To me you make your life about living, enjoying and getting things done.

This is the difference between "I can't because" vs "I can find a way".

You inspire me.

Thank you*.

You inspire me too, in different ways. I both admire and envy your ability to be principled about a whole range of things. I don't succeed so much at consistency of behavior (more than belief) but you are one of the people in my life who sets an example that challenges me to keep trying just by being who you are.

*The smart arse in me would like to say that it does depend on how I inspire you. I would hate to take even partial credit for any raping and pillaging sprees you've got planned, for instance. :P
