So it has come down to this...

For five years, my desktop computer, the mighty Iron Dragon, has served me well. On it i logged thousands of hours of computer games, downloaded hundreds of episodes and movies, and generally had a good time with computing. However, all good things must end, and i have decided to finally take old Iron Dragon out behind the chemical shed and ( Read more... )

I'm curious as to whose foot is also featured with Iron Dragon. It certainly is a dramatic upgrade, and I imagine that it should be adequate to satisfy all of your computer needs.

You know, I really think that selling a personal possession to Ian is more like the systematic removal of limbs without the benefit of anesthesia. The lingering neglect and frequent attempts to deconstruct it in order to understand how it works and to make it better is far lengthier of a process than a quick demise via shotgun.

whose foot always crops up in pictures? None other than the foot of the one who now owns the paperweight.

Good point; perhaps ian aims for other areas with that proverbial shotgun

I thought that, from historical precedence alone, that it might be Ian's foot, but then I doubted myself, noting that said foot is actually flesh colored.

good point. I believe it had been recently cleaned, as ian tends to use the shower when arriving fresh from football practice.

And i use the word "fresh" very carefully...

yeah... well... you haven't known ian long. He has a very very very bad track record with material possessions, electronics in specific. He tends to destroy/neglect/give away anything of any value. It's like the essence of tyler durden has manifested itself as an aura of destruction.

So I gathered. :-)

Cool... it amuses me that the computer you just sold to Ian is roughly twice as powerful as my own, several years newer, and yet will likely have a shorter lifespan. What'd the new rig run ya, altogether?

Nice to know I'll have a chance to mess around on someone else's version of Vista, seeing as how I would never want to beta test it myself.

Sad, but true.

Winter cost me a total of $600, $500 for a refurbished hp from Frys, and then i put a $100 video card in it. When i require more power, i'll upgrade the video card and ram, but i don't see that happening for at least a couple of years, given that i exceed the recommended reqs of all the latest games.

Originally, i was just going to upgrade Iron Dragon, but after a little bit of research and a little bit of trial and error, i realized that my motherboard was just way too old to support any significant upgrades, and that none of my parts would wourk with a modern motherboard. So, i just went with a new setup.
Why didn't i just build it myself? Basically, because of the deal frys was having for the refurb hp, i saved approx. $300 and still got quality components.

Indeed. Feel free to mess with it when you're over this weekend to your heart's content :)

That "originally I was going to just upgrade" thing sounds really familiar, doesn't it... :P

Well I'm glad Vista's working out for you. I actually like the new interface a lot as well, though it takes some getting used to. The speed of my new computer is just like night and day, particularly since the old one went really buggy after being totally infected.

I can't believe you had so little hard drive space. What did you do with all your anime? Your porn? Your music? Your pictures? I needed 250 gigs for all that stuff alone... much less all the high-end programmes I have running.

-hehe, yeah, i thought of you when i went to frys :)

-Turning off UAC helped ALOT for me. I'm quite happy with it now.

-anime- burned to vcd, porn- burned to cd, music- only have 8gigs of music, just ate that chunk on my hd, pictures- again, only like 7 gigs of pics, though i had to keep those on my laptop (that was also because i didn't have a memstick slot on iron dragon, and his usb rate was so abysmal that it took literally 15 min to copy a gig worth of data from a flash drive... soooo much better now!)

EDIT: Bonus points for anyone who can tell me the origin of the name of my new compy.
Wintermute, from the Neuromancer series (which bored the hell out of me, BTW).

All the books?

Finished the first book, author's style never really clicked with me, and found myself bored often. Started the second book, realized I was bored again and could be doing better things with my time, never finished it.

fair enough.

It's really a shame that cyberpunk died so quickly as a theme (in literature, at least). There really aren't that many authors to choose from.
