PSA: How Not to Do Orihime

Jul 03, 2010 01:48

I've been bouncing this off a few people for a while, and it's time for another one of those posts - you know, the really fun informative essay kind. Today's topic: Common Weird Things People Do to Orihime in RP and Fics and Why You Shouldn't Do Them.

Red Bean Paste, Little Blue Men, Word Salad, and more! )

Red bean buns are fcuking deliciousa

No, seriously. JUST TRY IT.

(I'm kinda annoyed when people assume that certain combinations are icky when it .. really isn't. Ever try century eggs with ginger? That's icky but damn delicious. Asian cuisine will be strange no matter how you look at it, but at least attempt unconventional combinations instead anything that sounded strange. Japanese people eat raw stuff, yo! )

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH CENTURY EGGS! I've. Sob. I've had those. Not with ginger, but it'd probably make them taste better. (to be fair, I liked the whites, just... not the yolks)

I love buns so much, dude. Red beans aren't my favorite, but leek and bbq pork are AMAZING.

Century egg yolks is a given. It's bitter and it lingers in your mouth - like spring onions, ginger, leek, they are acquired tastes. But it's not uncommon. There are people who live off eating things like natto, seaweed soup, pickled radish and .. just about pickled everything. Oh, try it with ginger, it eliminates the smell of the yolk ( ... )

Since my standards for fics and RPs can be admittedly low, I actually don't mind it when people use the first two in their writing. I do agree, that latter is very much awkward to read if Orihime's 'depression' is written incorrectly. XD

Thanks for posting this though! It's definitely given me some insight on Orihime and some things I should definitely change when writing my stuff. <3

I'm... actually pretty forgiving when I'm reading fics. But the word salad stuff turns me right off. If the red bean paste isn't done too badly, I don't mind as much, though.

I'm glad you liked it, though! |Da

haha, I honestly read this and then quickly scanned through the fanfic I'm working on to make sure I didn't make any of those mistakes ^_^' I think some of them wear off on me as I read more fics. Plus with the current lack of Orihime, I kinda forget some of the details (Darn it, Kubo! Give us more Orihime!! >:O)

The one I'm probably most guilty of is the randomness part. You made a good point. It's kind of hard to break the habit entirely, though D: But I'm working on it!

I think a lot of people have taken to doing them just because they're in so many fanfics. I think there was at least one person on my flist who didn't realize Orihime *didn't* talk about Little Blue Men in the series.

The randomness is kind of upsetting because it'll be in otherwise good fics, too. It's jarring when it's in a good fic.

Today I had kuromitsu an for dessert, and yesterday I cooled off with taiyaki icecream... filled with red bean paste.

LOL I'M ORIHIME!!!

Seriously though, what the balls. That fandom sounds like it would drive anyone abso-fucking-lutely insane.

Oooh, that actually looks good. DAMN YOU ELA!

I wish I could say it's limited to just one set of shippers, but the other ships' fics I've read haven't been any better. In fact, they're usually worse - I've read a few by a particular BNF that have Orihime mispronouncing words she should know and trying to explain her food tastes away as saying she only combines sweet and sour things. Which not only makes Orihime look like a moron, but doesn't even jive with the stuff we've been shown that she actually eats (bread and red bean paste is... sweet and sour? Huh?).

I wish I could say I loved it, but I'm rather 'mneh' about it. Still, it's not something that should turn someone's stomach at a mention!
