I was in a really good mood earlier today because of the elections.  But when I couldn't find anyone to talk to who gave a shit about it one way or the other I just got depressed.  It isn't just that, but that reminded me of all the other things that annoy me about Binghamton.  I shouldn't complain, because I enjoy me classes and I have a nice ( Read more... )

ohhhh jess I'm sorry. That must be so frustrating. But I guess, I am kind of experiencing the opposite end of the spectrum--people here are in general so condescending and elitist and high brow and just well...rich...that I get embarrassed whenever the target brand label on my coat is in plain view or people ask me where I got my shoes and I say payless. I kind of feel like I need to get out of the northeast for just a second, to get a breath of fresh air or something. But yeah, over thanksgiving we will have some quality elitist time.

Actaully I kind of have both problems. Most people here are either from Long Island or NYC, so they are pretty Rich. The weird thing is that Long Island girls will wear 200 dollar jeans, 300 dollar shoes, and Tiffany jewelry, and yet still get really excited about eating at Applebees. I may be an elitist but I am kind of repulsed by their sense of entitlment. Obviously I'm making a generalization, but the stereotype definetly has some truth to it. People think upstate NY is all farmland and hicks, but we are so much more culturally aware in Rochester than these people that live 1 hour from NYC.

P.S Payless and Target rule

that's weird. That's actually something I've been thinking about, my biggest pet peeve: people who think that going out to eat means deciding between Applebee's and Ruby Tuesday's. And I mean, I'm no indie kid, I shop at Old Navy like everyone else, but come on. It is really strange though--at Brighton I thought I had the whole money spectrum worked out, I thought rich was Marisa Siegel, and then I came here and that just went right out the window. I feel like I'm at a prep school and like I have to hide the fact that I don't summer in portugal or have two longchamps bags or have fake fruit centerpieces at home.

I hate to this but we need to have some perspective. There may be ridiculously rich people at Tufts but we came from Brighton. We came from one of the best high schools in the country. We had the money to take AP classes, we indulged in drinking Starbucks, we had choir trips every year to see musicals, Javas, the Little, we had lots of nice clothes, MUN, wicked smart teachers in a district so full of wealth that it never fails to vote up school taxes ( ... )
