A place in the world. That was what Kaneki always wanted.
Since his childhood, when he lived with his mother and nothing could be better, the brunet felt that he didn’t really belong there, in that place, in that life, in that reality.
He was always struggling to fit, trying to use his voice, trying to be seen, but in the end, he was just a shadow; almost invisible, ignored by the others.
Kaneki was a lonely kid, the books being his only and more precious company. With them, he could be transported to magical places where he could find a place for himself.
Still, it was just a way to escape, a mere lie.
At that time, he started to compare himself with an oyster; trapped in a shell, secluded in his own universe, just a crust with nothing inside.
And he would’ve continued to think those kind of things if, one day, Hideyoshi Nagachika didn’t have the courage to lower his book, introduce himself and ask if they couldn’t be friends.
The blond, with his gentleness, smiles and warm attitude, started to make Kaneki realize that he was, in fact, someone worth of something, that inside the shell was, indeed, a pearl.
A place in the world was what Kaneki always wanted and, with Hide, he learned that he had much more than that.
