100 Films in a Year

Apr 06, 2006 17:35

This idea is totally stolen from singingrl.

I'm already kinda doing the same thing with books RIGHT HERE, so I thought adding a movie one to the fray would be fun too.

I love to rewatch films, so I'm going to add them to the list as well, but only ones I'm viewing for the first time will be included in the actual count. That way we can get a better grasp on how many films I actually watch during the year, but also how many *new* ones. What excites me the most, is that there's tons of films that everybody's seen that I haven't gotten around to yet. This would be a fun time to change that.

Also had it locked up as "private" at first, just so it wouldn't show up on flists, since nobody would care to see an empty list, lmfao. But I unlocked it and put it on my sidebar.

Key: Movies in italics I've seen before; movies in bold I watched for the first time.

2008/2009 Note: This year I'm only doing new movies. Since I'm all brave and going it alone now, I'm also going to try to see 25 movies in the theater. That's probably a little lofty, seeing as I saw 7 and 8 movies in the last two years there, but ah, we'll see how it goes. Anyway, they will be labeled in green.

Edited: I hate to do it, but I'm going to start fresh in '09. Just so it's running in an actual year, like my TV eps and books do now.

-- PREVIOUS YEARS --

Start Day: 04/06/06

01. Stand By Me (1986; R) - Stars: Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Jerry O'Connell and Corey Feldman. (It also features Kiefer Sutherland and Richard Dreyfuss.) Plot & Thoughts: It's a classic film about friendship. It was directed by Rob Reiner, and was based on the Stephen King novella "The Body." If you haven't seen it before you need to crawl out from under that rock you've been living under and rent it. Seriously. Right now. We'll all wait. (Re)Viewed on 04/06/06; Grade: A

02. The Lost Boys (1987; R) - Stars: Jason Patric, Kiefer Sutherland, Jamie Gertz, Edward Herrmann, Dianne Weist & The Coreys. Plot & Thoughts: I'd never seen this movie before now. I'd always meant to see it, but just never happened. And can I just say HA. Any movie that has a line like "My own brother a goddamn, shit-sucking vampire! Oh, you wait 'til mom finds out, buddy!" is cool by me. Cheesy, cheesy fun. So silly. It pretty much makes the BtVS movie look dramatic, hehehe. And Kiefer Sutherland, hanging upside-down, while vamped out, eerily resembles vampy Spike. Er, Spike resembles him, I guess. If Spike's look wasn't at least partially based on his character (along with Billy Idol, of course) I'll eat my hat. And my, my the little Corey (Haim) is a huge mouthbreather, isn't he? I never noticed before, but damn, he never closes it during this flick. Anyway, it was fun. Harmless, silly, 80's fun. And I have nothing against those qualities in a film. Viewed on 04/07/06; Grade: A-

03. Identity (2003; R) - Stars: John C. McGinley, Ray Liotta, John Cusack, Amanda Peet, etc. Plot & Thoughts: Meh. I'd heard really, really great things about it so I might have suffered from the sucktastic over-hype syndrome with this one when it wasn't the be all and end all of surprise filmmaking. It was good, but it certainly wasn't "The Sixth Sense" or anything like that. It just feels like it wasn't as smart as it thought it was. Viewed on 04/07/06; Grade: C+

04. Extreme Dating (2004; R) - Stars: Devon Sawa, Andrew Keegan, Amanda Detmer, Lee Tergesen, Jamie-Lynn Sigler & Dylan Neal. Plot & Thoughts: You have to understand, I was waiting for this one to *finally* be released. Not because I thought it'd be a classic (obviously not, since I first heard about it in 2002 and it was just now released, lmfao) but because I'm the world's worst at seeing things for certain actors. In this case? Dylan Neal. Duh. Though, he's only in it all of 5 minutes or so. Movie-wise? Eh. It wasn't good, yet, it wasn't bad enough to rile me up either. Just very middle of the road "mehness" going on. Those might be the worst kind of movies, really. At least bad ones you have an opinion on, ya know? It was supposed to be stupid comedy (I think) but it missed. Horribly. I have nothing aganist stupid, juvenile comedy - when it's funny. I have nothing against silly, over-the-top romantic comedies - when they're funny and sweet. I have nothing against buddy films or stupid criminal flicks either. This? Tried to dip its toes in everything, and failed at them all. Viewed on 04/07/06; Grade: D+ (And that's with the grace points for casting DN and letting him be funny.)

05. Cowboy Up (2001; PG-13) - Stars: Kiefer Sutherland, Daryl Hannah, Molly Ringwald & Marcus Thomas. Plot & Thoughts: Two brothers work the rodeo circuit. Kiefer Sutherland in clown makeup is pretty much priceless. I like cowboy movies. I like rodeo movies. I should be part of the target audience then. But there just wasn't anything to love. The novelty of Kiefer as a bullfighter wore off quickly, and that's almost all it had going for it. Hell with all the slightly flirty horseplay between the two leads (depsite them being, ya know, brothers, it's just that Kiefer seems to put sexual energy in everything) there wasn't anything to get invested in here. The suprise ending? Wasn't even a surprise. I saw it coming miles and miles and MILES away. Viewed on 04/08/06; Grade: D

06. The Ref (1994; R) - Stars: Denis Leary, Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis. (And John Scurti and Jimmy Burke are there for a bit too, hee!) Plot & Thoughts: Denis Leary is a thief that takes a family hostage on Christmas Eve. They annoy him. Hilarity ensues. I love Denis Leary. I'm pretty much okay watching him do his ranty thing, like: "From now on, the only person who gets to yell is me. Why? Because I have a gun. People with guns get to do whatever they want. Married people without guns - for instance - you - DO NOT get to yell. Why? NO GUNS! No guns, no yelling." So, while it's in no way the best movie ever, it was fun enough for a viewing on a lazy weekend afternoon. Viewed on 04/08/06; Grade: B-

07. The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005; R) - Stars: Steve Carrell, Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen, Jane Lynch. Plot & Thoughts: I totally and utterly adore Paul Rudd. I'm pretty fond of Seth Rogen. Jane Lynch has been in everything ever made, including being Pacey's mother on DC, so she's grown on me. Now, I have nothing aganist Frat Pack films. Nothing at all. There are several of them I really love. But this one? Really left me more than a little cold. I'd heard such good things about it, I was expecting more. This was just more "Waiting" than it was "Dodgeball" - okay for a viewing, but nothing I'd need to own. (Even though I already do, lmfao.) Viewed on 04/08/06; Grade: C-

08. Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004; PG-13) - Stars: Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, Alan Tudyk, Christine Taylor, etc. Plot & Thoughts: Now, this is a good Frat Pack flick. I mean, it has a pirate! One played by Alan Tudyk no less! I think this is actually the film that made me feel it was okay to like Vince Vaughn, especially as the "straight" man to the foils of the FPers. Ben Stiller works my last nerve most of the time, and that was the case here, but at least that was the point. The only thing that could have maybe made this one better was one (or two) Wilsons. PS: Jason Bateman is hilarious as Pepper. *Cotton: LeFleur is putting on a blindfold.* "Yes, he won't be able to see very well here, Cotton." Hee! So stupid, yet so funny. (Re)Viewed on 04/08/06; Grade: A-

09. The Outsiders (1983; PG-13) - Stars: C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Diane Lane & Crazy Tom Cruise. Plot & Thoughts: I didn't remember until I was watching it, but I'm fairly sure I read the book in school. That said, overall it was decent. Especially since it features a few actors that make my skin crawl on sight alone. Crazy Tom Cruise, of course, and Matt Dillon. Dillon, unsurprisingly, plays the same character he's played in 90% of the movies I've ever seen him in. How boring that must be for him, because I *know* it's boring for me. I'm also not that fond of Rob Lowe, but he was in The Hotel New Hampshire, a (deliberately) quirky flick I do like, so he still gets grace points for that. But this movie, is kinda like "Grease" in the respect that it makes greasers out to be, I don't know, cuddly. That never stopped me from like the former, and eventhough it's a musical, so the rules are a little different, I can't hold it against this film either, I suppose. Viewed on 04/08/06; Grade: B-

10. Say Anything (1989; PG-13) - Stars: John Cusack, Ione Skye, John Mahoney, Lili Taylor. Plot & Thoughts: Oh my, I now get why so I've seen so many Pacey Witter fans announce their love for Lloyd Dobler over the years. Pacey is very Dobler-esque. And that's a good thing, if you ask me. I should have seen this film before. It's easily one of the best 80's teen films I've seen. And hell, it even makes me like John Cusack - an actor I've never liked, nor disliked. He was always just there. Thanks to Lloyd Dobler, I get the appeal now. Viewed on 04/09/06; Grade: A

11. Parenthood (1989; PG-13) - Stars: Steve Martin, Mary Steenburgen, Dianne Wiest, Rick Moranis, Keanu Reeves, Martha Plimpton & Joaquin Phoenix. Plot & Thoughts: I've always loved this movie. It's such a nice balance of comedy and drama, and everytime it's on television I just can't seem to pass it up. If you haven't seen it, you should. You get to see little Leaf (Joaquin) Phoenix and with all Ron Howard films, you get to play spot Clint. Fun for everyone! (Re)Viewed on 04/09/06; Grade: A

12. Reservoir Dogs (1992; R) - Stars: Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Steve Buscemi, Quentin Tarantino, Chris Penn, Edward Bunker, Lawrence Tierney & Michael Madsen. Plot & Thoughts: I'd never seen this before, but since my dear friend Jessika loves it, I bought it around Christmas and just now got around to watching it. Eh. I know, I know. I just don't care for Tarantino that much. I don't. I know that's not "cool" or whatthefuckever, but I thought Kill Bill sucked. This was okay, but really not my kind of movie, I guess. Viewed on 04/09/06; Grade: C

13. This is Spinal Tap (1984; R) - Stars: Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer & Rob Reiner. Plot & Thoughts: Hee! This was a blast. It's one of those films I felt like I'd seen before, just because its so much a part of popular culture. Like, in VM when Keith was all, "Hello, Cleveland!" I knew what he was talking about, without actually seeing it. Too weird. I'm kinda glad I waited this long to see it. I have a feeling that so much of this would have been lost on me as a teenager. As is, rock and roll bands isn't my forte, but at least I know enough to find it wonderful, and hilarious, satire. Viewed on 04/11/06; Grade: B

14. Just Friends (2005; PG-13) - Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Amy Smart, Anna Faris & Chris Klein. Plot & Thoughts: Not the best romantic comedy, and not the best Ryan Reynolds flick, but I still enjoyed it. Ryan is so likable in everything he does, that it would be hard not to love him. That said, I was digging the first hour or so, but then things came to a sudden, grinding halt. Part of that I blame on the Blockbuster disc I had to take out and clean because it stopped fucking playing (Seriously, what do people DO to those discs? Eat off them? Use them as coasters? Let their children with JAM COVERED FINGERS touch them? Fucking twits. I seriously have to try and clean more of them than not when I rent, it seems.) but mostly because it just got really slow. The "romantic" part of the romantic comedy, I guess. I don't know. It just got slow, and I got bored. But still. Ryan = Yay! Viewed on 04/14/06; Grade: B-

15. Starsky & Hutch (2004; PG-13) - Stars: Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Juliette Lewis & Snoop Dogg. (Plus lots of appearances, like: Will Ferrell, Chris Penn, Terry Crews, Jason Bateman, Patton Oswalt, etc.) Plot & Thoughts: First off, anything that uses Folsom Prison Blues (by Johnny Cash) and I'm a Ramblin' Man (by Waylon Jennings) back-to-back on their soundtrack wins at life. Secondly, anyone that uses Afternoon Delight (by Starland Vocal Band) while talking about unseen slashiness, which is funny enough it can halfway make me forget The Beek's horrifying Afternoon Delight scene (if you don't know, don't ask, you're lucky) say it with me now...wins at life. That said, overall it was just okay. Funny, but not hilariously so. I haven't seen much of the original series (but what I have seen, I know of it's slashiness) so at least the movie brought that quality to the movie. It is a love story between the two of them, obviously. I mean, there's a classic "we can't live without each other" lovesong montage set to We've Only Just Begun (by The Carpenters) for god's sake. 'Nuff said. Viewed on 04/15/06; Grade: C+

16. Keep Your Distance (2005; R) - Stars: Gil Bellows, Jennifer Westfeldt, Kim Raver & Christian Kane. Plot & Thoughts: It was a nice character piece. The mystery wasn't all the mysterious, but I really think it was more about the characters and their actions and responses, instead of a "whodunit" film. And that's totally okay with me. I'm kinda glad they didn't try to throw in a "SURPRISE! THE BUTLER DID IT!" ending. That would have sucked. Anyway, as a big plus, it features Christian Kane as an actor and a singer. Viewed on 04/15/06; Grade: B+

17. Flightplan (2005; PG-13) - Stars: Jodie Foster, Peter Sarsgaard, Erika Christensen & Sean Bean. Plot & Thoughts: This movie blew. Hard. The "twist" was easy to spot miles away, if you're even remotely aware of what "cast to type" means. Just awful. The best part was admiring the set design of the plane itself. Not hardly enough to want to see a film for though. That said, I do like Sarsgaard, usually, but this just wasn't the right vehile to showcase his talent. At all. Viewed on 04/15/06; Grade: D

18. Prime (2005; PG-13) - Stars: Uma Thurman, Bryan Greenberg, Jon Abrahams & Meryl Streep. Plot & Thoughts: I thought this was pretty good for a romantic comedy, actually, which surprised me. I can generally take or leave Uma Thurman, but I really liked her here, as she was very endearing as Rafi. Also endearing? Bryan Greenberg, but I was already sold on him as Jake Jagielski from One Tree Hill's first season (which was watchable, even good at times, so STFU), so that wasn't a suprise. Heh. Anyway, it was good. Totally a romantic comedy, but different enough to make me enjoy the time spent watching it. Viewed on 04/15/06; Grade: B+

19. When a Stranger Calls (2006; PG-13) - Stars: Camilla Belle, Tommy Flanagan & Tessa Thompson. Plot & Thoughts: I had no desire to see this, and man, were my instincts ever correct here. The only reason I saw it today was because my BFF had rented it and was too scared to watch it alone, so in stepped me, unfazed horror movie watching girl. And hours later, I still have no words. No words, I say! What an awful, awful film. It made The Fog look like a masterpiece, people! That's just so sad. Stupid storyline, improbable set designs, just utter crap. I can't even think of one nice thing to say, as it's so very easily the worst film I've viewed so far during this little adventure. Viewed on 05/24/06; Grade: F

20. The Wedding Planner (2001; PG-13) - Stars: Jennifer Lopez, Matthew McConaughey, Bridgette Wilson & Justin Chambers. Plot & Thoughts: I was really two for two today, eh? I stay away from JLo movies for a reason. They suck. (Though, I have seen Selena roughly eleventybillion times, as it's my BFF's favorite movie.) McConaughey doesn't do much for me either, and together, their chemistry was basically non-existent. And in all honestly, I don't believe I would have recognized Chambers had he not been the reason I was submitting myself to this unfunny torture. I would have been more apt to think, "Man, that actor looks a lot like Daniel Bess. But, well, not." Which is weird, as I don't think they look alike at all, in general. Maybe I could just really see Bess in the role for some reason. Either way, I can't say I ever missed much by not catching this years ago. Not even my habitual desire to seek out flicks of actors I'm digging can make this one worthwhile. Viewed on 05/24/06; Grade: D-

21. Psycho (1998; R) - Stars: Vince Vaughn, Anne Heche, Viggo Mortensen, Julianne Moore, & William H. Macy. Plot & Thoughts: Honestly, I haven't seen the original but once. It's like the punchline you've heard the joke to eight thousand times before hearing the actual joke -- not so great once put together, 'cause you know how it ends. I haven't seen Citizen Kane, and probably won't either, because watching modern television and movies for the past 20 years have told me what that twist is too. Anyway, back to this: I saw it on TV, so I watched. I knew it was a near shot-for-shot remake. But even not being an original Psycho fan, I have to say I certainly don't remember Norman Bates giggling. Right? Because that's exactly what happens here. Vince Vaughn giggles his way through the entire thing. Not manic, nervous tick-ish, creepy laughter - more "look how funny and charming I am" giggling. And if you, like me, know VV from his Frat Pack roles, it makes for the most nonthreatening killer. Ever. Despite the fact that Norman Bates is now built like, well, Vince Vaughn. So if they had to remake this (why?) I think he was probably quite miscast. The only thing I learned, is yet again, it's not Viggo I find attractive, it's only Aragorn. Heh. Viewed on 05/29/06; Grade: D

22. Wag the Dog (1997; R) - Stars: Dustin Hoffman, Robert De Niro, Denis Leary, Anne Heche, Willie Nelson, Suzanne Cryer, Woody Harrelson & William H. Macy. Plot & Thoughts: There's a William H. Macy marathon on, so I caught this too. I had no idea what it was about going in. Once I quickly surmised that it's a satire, I was amused and interested. All the actors turned in great performaces - from the slightly over-the-top (Hoffman) to the downright unflappable (De Niro) - it's all good. Denis Leary, one you all know I always love regardless, turns in an "wacky" character that's at the same time completely understated. And that's perfect for this. I wish Suzanne Cryer had a larger role, perhaps in Anne Heche's part instead, because by her work on TGaaG, she'd be wonderful in a larger role in this delightful political black comedy. Viewed on 05/29/06; Grade: B+

23. The Butterfly Effect (2004; R) - Stars: Ashton Kutcher, Amy Smart, Elden Henson, William Lee Scott, Ethan Suplee & Eric Stoltz. Plot & Thoughts: Was on after the WHM marathon, so I thought what they hell, how bad could it be? Bad. So, so bad. I got bored less than halfway through and almost changed the channel. But I wanted to count it, since I'd already started the damn thing, so I watched the rest. It really seems like it could have been a good idea. It just didn't turn out that way. Way too much flipping back and forth between realities to keep me interested in it very long. Viewed on 05/29/06; Grade: D-

24. Ladder 49 (2004; PG-13) - Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, John Travolta, Jacinda Barret, Robert Patrick & Balthazar Getty. Plot & Thoughts: I've seen this before, but saw it was on TV today, so I watched it again. The only new thing I have to say is that I'd forgotten Balthazar Getty was in it. Heh. Anyway, it's a good movie. This was the first movie I really took a shine to Joaquin in. I still think he's weird as hell at times, and really not as great looking as everyone lets on, lmfao. That might be because he reminds me of a weird character one of my high school friends would have created. And while I loved that guy to death, it was only as a friend and not in a hot way. LOL. Anyway, Joaquin is a good actor. Very effective, I'll give him that. (Re)Viewed on 05/30/06; Grade: A-

25. Southern Belles (2005; R) - Stars: Anna Faris, Laura Breckenridge & Justin Chambers. Plot & Thoughts: There's very little plot here, and yeah, it's kinda stupid - but it's a great kind of stupid. Very tongue-in-cheek (how could it not be, with a character named Rhett Butler?) and just...cute, in that over-the-top farcical way. Not the best movie ever made, but it knew what it was, and went for it. I appreciate that in a flick. And anytime someone wants to put Justin Chambers in a cop uniform with aviator sunglasses, no less, I'm all for it. Heh. Viewed on 06/04/06; Grade: B

26. Superman Returns (2006; PG-13) - Stars: Brandon Routh, Kate Bosworth, Sam Huntington, James Marsden, Frank Langella, Parker Posey & Kevin Spacey. Plot & Thoughts: I just thought it was very fun. Sweet. Retro. I loved the throwback credits. Plus, I'm a little bit in love with Sam Huntington - especially him as Jimmy Olsen. He was great as Luke on VM, but gosh, he's just adorkable as Jimmy. If I had one complaint, and really, it isn't even one - was that Kevin Spacey (while fab!) holds no candle to Michael Rosenbaum's Lex. Yes, I'm serious. SV has spoiled me because of the awesome Clexness, and the movie really couldn't bring that for me. But I do like that Spacey seemingly played him with some nice middle ground between Rosey's serious!smart!Lex and Hackman's rich!campy!Lex. That was a nice choice, and fitting for the film. Though, I must ask, WTF were up with his boots? And the corduroy suits? Eeesh. Rosenbaum's Lex Luthor wouldn't be caught dead in those get-ups. LOL. Overall, I really enjoyed it, and I hope the franchise continues. Viewed on 07/01/06; Grade: A

27. Walk the Line (2005; PG-13) - Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Ginnifer Goodwin, Shooter Jennings, Tyler Hilton & Robert Patrick. Plot & Thoughts: I've seen this movie tons of times by now, but I still love it, so when the boys wanted to watch it in the middle of the night again - I was totally game. The cast has chemistry like, whoa - and of course talent. Great movie, great preformances all around. SO MUCH LOVE. If you haven't seen it yet, you should. Even if you're not a huge Johnny Cash fan like I am. It's a great movie on its own, that just happens to tell the story of Johnny and June's great love. (Re)Viewed on 07/03/06; Grade: A

28. Lady in White (1988; PG-13) - Stars: Lukas Haas, Len Cariou, Alex Rocco & Katherine Helmond. Plot & Thoughts: I'm so disappointed. My friends and I - the exact same ones that remembered being TERRIFIED of this movie - sat down last night and watched this movie. We were sure it would disappoint us. But we just didn't ever expect HOW much. WTF is this movie? The jaunty music? The crappiness. Wow. I cannot believe we were so utterly scared of this once upon a time. The only reason I'm not giving this one an F is because I'm a sentimental fool. Bah. (Re)Viewed on 07/11/06; Grade: D-

29. The Ringer (2005; PG-13) - Stars: Johnny Knoxville, Bill Chott, Brian Cox, Jed Rees, Edward Barbanell & Katherine Heigl. Plot & Thoughts: I really ended up liking this more than I ever thought I would. It just wasn't what I expected, I guess. I've never really been a fan of Johnny Knoxville, so this was never really on my list of "must-see" flicks, but my BFF wanted to watch it, so I rented it...and am kinda glad I did. I'm a fan of silly comedy, of course, but there really was more to this one than that alone. Viewed on 07/20/06; Grade: B+

30. Glory Road (2006; PG) - Stars: Josh Lucas, Derek Luke, Emily Deschanel, Evan Jones, Tatyana Ali, Sam Jones III & Jon Voight. Plot & Thoughts: Product Placement Pete plays basketball, whee! I'm a bit of a sucker for sports movies. But sadly, after you've seen a couple dozen of them, you've seen them all, it seems. This wasn't a bad movie, of course, but it was just the same as so many other things I've seen. And Josh Lucas falls in a weird place for me. He's one of those actors I don't exactly fangirl, I mean, I wouldn't go out of my way to see a flick just because of his part in it. But once I see him in something, I generally like him in it. Anyway, it was good, and fit into the genre well. And I'm obviously not tired of the genre, because I am looking forward to "We Are Marshall" - but that might be more a Foxy thing, than a sports underdog/tragedy thing. Viewed on 07/20/06; Grade: C+

31. Bubble Boy (2001; PG-13) - Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Swoozie Kurtz, Marley Shelton & Danny Trejo. Plot & Thoughts: Viewed on 07/24/06; Grade: C-

32. Final Destination 3 (2006; R) - Stars: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ryan Merriman, Kris Lemche & Alexz Johnson. Plot & Thoughts: Viewed on 07/25/06; Grade: D-

33. The Benchwarmers (2006; PG-13) - Stars: Rob Schneider, David Spade, Jon Heder & Jon Lovitz. Plot & Thoughts: Viewed on 07/25/06; Grade: C

34. Clerks II (2006; R) - Stars: Brian O'Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Rosario Dawson, Jason Mewes, Trevor Fehrman & Kevin Smith. Plot & Thoughts: I liked it. It made me laugh. It's still not my favorite movie in the View Askew 'verse, but if you like Kevin Smith films, see it. If you liked Clerks, see it. Yes, it's different, but at the heart it's still Dante and Randal over-talking everything to death, and that's why I liked them in the first place. Viewed on 07/28/06; Grade: B+

35. Super Troopers (2001; R) - Stars: Erik Stolhanske, Jay Chandrasekhar, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter & Kevin Heffernan. Plot & Thoughts: Viewed on 08/08/06; Grade: B-

36. World Trade Center (2006; PG-13) - Stars: Nicolas Cage, Michael Pena, Maria Bello, Jay Hernandez & Maggie Gyllenhaal. Plot & Thoughts: Viewed on 08/11/06; Grade: D

37. Pulse (2006; PG-13) - Stars: Kristen Bell, Ian Somerhalder, Christina Milian, Samm Levine & Ron Rifkin. Plot & Thoughts: Viewed on 08/11/06; Grade: C-

38. Slither (2006; R) - Stars: Nathan Fillion, Elizabeth Banks, Gregg Henry & Michael Rooker. Plot & Thoughts: Viewed on 10/24/06; Grade: B

41. The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy (2000; R) - Stars: Timothy Olyphant, Zach Braff, Dean Cain, Andrew Keegan, Justin Theroux, Ben Weber, Christian Kane, Kerr Smith & John Mahoney. Plot & Thoughts: I fucking love this movie. I've loved this movie since the first time I saw it. It may have even been the first place I ever saw Zach Braff and Christian Kane, but it's been so long now, and I've loved them both too long to really tell you. Anyway. See it if you haven't. It's light, and fun, and I don't know, I just like the tone of it. (Re)Viewed on 11/25/06; Grade: A

42. Brian's Song (2001; NR) - Stars: Sean Maher, Mekhi Phifer, Ben Gazzara, Elise Neal & Paula Cale. Plot & Thoughts: (Re)Viewed on 11/25/06; Grade: A-

43. K-PAX (2001; PG-13) - Stars: Kevin Spacey, Jeff Bridges, Mary McCormack & Alfre Woodard. Plot & Thoughts: Viewed on 11/30/06; Grade: C

44. Dead & Breakfast (2004; R) - Stars: Ever Carradine, Erik Palladino, David Carradine, Bianca Lawson, Oz Perkins, Diedrich Bader, Jeremy Sisto & Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Plot & Thoughts: This was a great little independent film. I didn't go into it expecting anything (other than to see JDM) and was impressed! Don't expect flash, as it looks like an independent film - the effects are crappy - but it was good fun, regardless. Viewed on 12/01/06; Grade: B

45. Lightning Bug (2004; NR) - Stars: Bret Harrison, Laura Prepon, Kevin Gage & Hal Sparks. Plot & Thoughts: Another great little independent film. Bret Harrison is a wonderful actor - who, if you're familiar with you'll know is fucking gifted comedically - that shows here he can act dramatically too. Viewed on 12/01/06; Grade: B-

46. The Break-Up (2006; PG-13) - Stars: Vince Vaughn, Jennifer Aniston, Joey Lauren Adams, Jon Favreau & Jason Bateman. Plot & Thoughts: I think I may have fallen asleep during this one, because I hardly remember anything about it. Must not of been that great, if it couldn't keep my attention. Maybe I'll try to rewatch it sometime to get a better feel of it. Viewed on 12/03/06; Grade: C-

47. Sling Blade (1996; R) - Stars: Billy Bob Thornton, Lucas Black, Dwight Yoakam, Robert Duvall & John Ritter. Plot & Thoughts: This is one of those movies I can't fucking believe I've never seen before. No wonder my friend was up my ass ALL THE TIME to rent this one. So very good. It's one of those roles, that even though I damn well knew it was Billy Bob Thornton playing the lead, every so often I would question it, regardless. Actors that can do that, disappear into a role so much that you're not even sure it's them, totally impress me. Viewed on 12/19/06; Grade: A

48. Clerks II (2006; R) - Stars: Brian O'Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Rosario Dawson, Jason Mewes, Trevor Fehrman & Kevin Smith. Plot & Thoughts: Still the same thoughts as before, on #34. (Re)Viewed on 12/23/06; Grade: B+

49. Grandma's Boy (2006; R) - Stars: Allen Covert, Peter Dante, Joel Moore, Kevin Nealon, Linda Cardellini, Shirley Jones, Shirley Knight & Doris Roberts. Plot & Thoughts: My friends love this movie. Wanted me to see it forever. When I finally did. Eh. Not that impressed, really. Viewed on 12/23/06; Grade: C-

50. We Are Marshall (2006; PG) - Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Matthew Fox, Kate Mara, Ian McShane & David Strathairn. Plot & Thoughts: I really enjoyed this movie. Matthew Fox was wonderful, and understated, and all the things one should bring to a film like this. McConaughey, well, he took another route. So many acting tics, so little time. I don't know if that was true to the man he was playing, or just an odd choice, but it was all very distracting. I love the movie, but would have enjoyed it more had he toned it down a notch. Or fifty. Viewed on 12/27/06; Grade: A-

51. The Last Kiss (2006; R) - Stars: Zach Braff, Jacinda Barrett, Eric Christian Olsen, Casey Affleck, Rachel Bilson & Blythe Danner. Plot & Thoughts: I'm disappointed. I was really, really, really looking forward to this movie. I expected something resembling another Garden State, and that, my friends, is not was I was handed. I expect (most) movies to have a least one big plot. I get the meandering character pieces. I do. But those characters have to be interesting. These? Just weren't. There's nothing more I hate on a movie than when the credits role to be forced to say, "That's it?!" And that was my reaction to this film, more or less. (And when putting this short together, I discovered that the writer of the screenplay also wrote Crash and it all makes a little more sense. Yes. I admit, I wasn't a fan of that movie either. Blah.) Viewed on 12/28/06; Grade: C-

52. Pay It Forward (2000; PG-13) - Stars: Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt, Jay Mohr, Jon Bon Jovi, James Caviezel & Haley Joel Osment. Plot & Thoughts: Good movie! Manipulative as hell, but a good movie, regardless. Heavy-handed can work, sometimes, they are movies for god's sake and working you over is their job, so I feel that it did work here. Good acting. Viewed on 12/29/06; Grade: B+

53. Clerks. (1994; R) - Stars: Brian O'Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Jason Mewes, Marilyn Ghigliotti, Scott Mosier & Kevin Smith. Plot & Thoughts: After watching Clerks II again over Christmas, I knew it'd been too long since I'd revisted the first one. So I broke out my Clerks X boxset, and found out it's still as charming and rough and ever - which is what I loved about it to begin with. If you've never seen it, give it a go. Great flick. (Re)Viewed on 12/29/06; Grade: A-

54. Clerks (1995; R) - Stars: Jason Lee, Shannen Doherty, Jeremy London, Claire Forlani, Ethan Suplee, Ben Affleck, Jason Mewes & Kevin Smith. Plot & Thoughts: Not the best of Kevin Smith's films, but certainly worth watching if you like his style of movie making. Lots and lots and lots of dialogue, often peppered with pop culture and geekology. (Re)Viewed on 12/30/06; Grade: B-

55. Lucky Seven (2003; PG-13) - Stars: Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Brad Rowe, Lochlyn Munro & Patrick Dempsey. Plot & Thoughts: It's one of those movies you can sniff out as a made for TV movie instantly, and sometimes, that's all you're in the mood for so it's okay. This movie is okay. Passing. Nothing special, but nothing worth crying foul over either. Viewed on 12/30/06; Grade: C-

56. Spanglish (2004; PG-13) - Stars: Adam Sandler, Téa Leoni, Paz Vega & Cloris Leachman. Plot & Thoughts: Eh. Not bad, but not good either. Well, Adam Sandler was pretty good with the material provided. I don't know, it's just that I'm so easy to please - as if I'm in the mood a funny rom-com is nothing I'm too good for, you know? And this wasn't really that, but it wasn't a touching drama either. It just didn't seem to know what it was, so it left me a little on the fence too. Viewed on 12/30/06; Grade: C+

57. One Fine Day (1996; PG) - Stars: George Clooney, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mae Whitman, Alex D. Linz & Charles Durning. Plot & Thoughts: Sometimes you just feel like watching George Clooney play the romantic lead. We all (oh come on now, all) had a bit of a soft spot for Doug Ross back in 1996 - which probably led to the fact that a group of junior high girls selected this movie to see on their class trip. (Well, that, and PG movies were probably the rating limit back then, heh.) It's a rom-com, pure and simple. It just has George Clooney being dashing with his old school Caesar haircut. Which, really, is enough to enjoy. (Re)Viewed on 12/31/06; Grade: C+

58. Ocean's Eleven (2001; PG-13) - Stars: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Scott Caan, Casey Affleck, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, Bernie Mac, Elliott Gould, Don Cheadle Andy Garcia & Carl Reiner. Plot & Thoughts: I loved this movie when I saw it in the theater (both times) and still love it now. Great cast, giving great performances in a fun story. (Re)Viewed on 12/31/06; Grade: A

59. Americano (2005; R) - Stars: Joshua Jackson, Leonor Varela, Timm Sharp, Ruthanna Hopper & Dennis Hopper. Plot & Thoughts: Way, way too meandering for me. I never connected with the lead character, the whole time it was like, "Ooooh, watching Josh Jackson traipse about." Which, you know, is good, but not really enough to base a movie on. I mean, I got the point of it, but the point wasn't that good. Viewed on 01/02/07; Grade: C-

60. Liberty Heights (1999; R) - Stars: Adrien Brody, Ben Foster, Bebe Neuwirth, Orlando Jones, Joe Mantegna, David Krumholtz, Richard Kline, Justin Chambers & James Pickens Jr. Plot & Thoughts: This one was pretty good - even if Ben Foster creeps me out, in general. Good cast, interesting characters, engaging plot - all and all, a pretty damn good movie. Viewed on 01/02/07; Grade: A-

61. Love 101 (2000; R) - Stars: Michael Muhney, Mary Kay Cook, Jon Collins, Jim Slonina, Heidi Mokrycki & Jeff Anderson. Plot & Thoughts: Holy bad movie, Batman. I mean, like, really bad. Usually I can at least muster up a "well, see it if you're a fan of _______" reaction, but here, I don't even think I can do that. Just not of the good. Cliched, and not greatly acted. I adore Michael Muhney on Veronica Mars. You all know I do. But with this material, I mean, nobody can work miracles. And Jeff Anderson (yes, that Jeff Anderson) while always slightly stiff, but fucking funny as hell as Randal Graves (which totally works) is wasted here. Not only is the plot bad, the whole film is almost...discolored. It just looks craptastic too. Viewed on 01/04/07; Grade: D-

62. A Walk to Remember (2002; PG) - Stars: Shane West, Mandy Moore, Daryl Hannah & Peter Coyote. Plot & Thoughts: I actually like this film better than the book, which I also just re-read, and that's a very rare thing for me to believe, let alone say. What makes it even more surprising is that I don't exactly care for any of that cast that much. Sometimes you're just in the mood for a sappy story, and this right here is certainly one. (Re)Viewed on 01/04/07; Grade: B

63. The Notebook (2004; PG-13) - Stars: Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, Kevin Connolly, James Marsden, Gena Rowlands & James Garner. Plot & Thoughts: Hell, while we're in the mood for sappy love stories (written by Nicholas Sparks) I thought I'd rewatch this one too, which I had only seen one time before and barely remember. I don't like it near as much as AWTR, but it's charming (but seems kinda long for some reason) in its own right. (Re)Viewed on 01/05/07; Grade: B

64. The Rookie (2002; G) - Stars: Dennis Quaid, Rachel Griffiths, Jay Hernandez, Angus T. Jones & Brian Cox. Plot & Thoughts: I have a soft spot for uplifting sports films, but this was just a little too sacchirine even for me. Even if Angus T. Jones is just about as adorable as they come, it wasn't enough to make really rank with all the amazing sport-themed movies I love. Viewed on 01/06/07; Grade: C+

65. Wedding Crashers (2005; R) - Stars: Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Bradley Cooper, Isla Fisher, Jane Seymour & Christopher Walken. Plot & Thoughts: This isn't my favorite "frat pack"-ish film, but it's a good one, still. Plus, Bradley Cooper is great in it. A fucking asshole, sure, but funny as hell. It's weird, because Vince Vaughn has really grown on me in the past year or so - I don't know - I really like his ability to play the straight man, who is also funny, like in Dodgeball. (Re)Viewed on 01/06/07; Grade: B+

66. Must Love Dogs (2005; PG-13) - Stars: Diane Lane, John Cusack, Elizabeth Perkins, Dermot Mulroney & Stockard Channing. Plot & Thoughts: Eh. It was just okay for a rom-com, I guess, nothing to write home about that's for sure. I've seen John Cusack do much, much better with rom-com material, so this just really didn't impress me much. Viewed on 01/06/07; Grade: C

67. The Lake House (2006; PG) - Stars: Sandra Bullock, Keanu Reeves, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Christopher Plummer & Dylan Walsh. Plot & Thoughts: I thought this movie would be more fun. I mean, you can't have such an implausible plot basis and then NOT make it fun. It just doesn't work that way for me. Viewed on 01/07/07; Grade: D

68. Click (2006; PG-13) - Stars: Adam Sandler, Kate Beckinsale, David Hasselhoff, Henry Winkler, Sean Astin & Christopher Walken. Plot & Thoughts: Now this is a great way to take an implausible plot and make it fun and even a little touching. I don't feel the urge to see it again and again, by any means, but it was definitely okay. Viewed on 01/07/07; Grade: B-

69. 50 First Dates (2004; PG-13) - Stars: Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Sean Astin, Rob Schneider, Blake Clark & Dan Aykroyd. Plot & Thoughts: Rob Schneider goes a long fucking ways for me, and this movie was just too, too much of him doing his stupid wacky schtick. However, the ending saved this film for me, it really did. *spoiler alert* I was expecting one of those storytelling miracles to make everything all better, and when it didn't come, I was pleasantly surprised. *end of spoiler* Viewed on 01/07/07; Grade: C+

70. Fun With Dick and Jane (2005; PG-13) - Stars: Jim Carrey, Téa Leoni, Richard Jenkins, Carlos Jacott & Alec Baldwin. Plot & Thoughts: Meh. Jim Carrey is probably past his prime of doing his wacky, mugging schtick - or if he isn't, this wasn't the vehicle for him to be doing it in at least. Viewed on 01/08/07; Grade: C

71. The Groomsmen (2006; R) - Stars: Edward Burns, Matthew Lillard, Donal Logue, John Leguizamo, Jay Mohr & Brittany Murphy. Plot & Thoughts: Aww, I liked this movie. Quite a bit actually. You all know I'm a big fan of Logue and Lillard, and they were both great in this one - especially Lillard. It's still a little strange to see him playing an actual grown-up, but he did it wonderfully here. Good film about funny and (mostly) real male characters, trying to sort out their lives. Viewed on 01/08/07; Grade: A-

72. Something New (2006; PG-13) - Stars: Sanaa Lathan, Simon Baker, Blair Underwood, Donald Faison & Alfre Woodard. Plot & Thoughts: I'd wanted to see this one since I saw it previewed during Brokeback Mountain. Once I finally did - it was okay. Not great, not bad, but certainly okay. Charming enough. Viewed on 01/08/07; Grade: C+

73. Little Athens (2005; R) - Stars: John Patrick Amedori, Shawn Hatosy, Rachel Minor, DJ Qualls, Eric Szmanda & Jorge Garcia. Plot & Thoughts: Viewed on 01/11/07; Grade: D

74. The Longest Yard (2005; PG-13) - Stars: Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Terry Crews, Nelly & Burt Reynolds. Plot & Thoughts: Viewed on 01/11/07; Grade: C

75. Little Miss Sunshine (2006; R) - Stars: Abigail Breslin, Greg Kinnear, Steve Carell & Alan Arkin. Plot & Thoughts: Viewed on 01/11/07; Grade: A
