I followed the news from Boston mostly via the Guardian and the Atlantic, and it's been surreal even from here.
Predominant thoughts include a lot of "but I've been there!" and "damn, he's just this kid." So far everyone I know has been safe, but with a couple near-misses (former students who were at the marathon) and a lot of locked-down hiding (
meanfreepath at Harvard comes especially to mind). We tried to fill the kids in about it as much as we could, without letting it take over classes. This is where Chechnya is. It's in the Caucasus. This is where the Caucasus is. Any more questions?
Here are some articles reflecting on the events that I thought were worth reading:
Study: Americans not informed enough to stereotype Chechens (The Onion)
What you should know about Chechnya as the story unfolds (The Atlantic)
The Boston bombers were Muslim; it shouldn't matter. (The Atlantic)
The President's Perspective (The Dish)
