Bear! (and a ground squirrel...)

Ever since N has purchased a zoom lens for me, it has been my dream to take a picture of a bear. I carry the zoom lens with me everywhere on the off chance that I'll get a lucky encounter. The most popular trail of the Yosemite National Park would probably be the last place I would have expected to see a bear, but here I was, standing among dozens ( Read more... )

To be honest, I would feel much better if I consistently identified the bears at 100%. My survival in case of bear encounter depends on that...

Hmm, I got 80% on the test, apparently by intuition because I did not look up the characteristics of black bears vs. grizzly.

Wow, good job! :-) The differences are very subtle: the shape of the ears, the hump, the length of nails...

in this case it is easy, because there is no grizzly bear in CA

Yup, read about it on the Yosemite's official website too. No grizzly bears, only black bears.

grizzly bears were completely wiped out by hunters everywhere in USA except Alaska.
currently in lower states you only have a chance to see them in Montana and in Yellowstone, where they were re-introduced.

There is a "theory" that grizzly might sometimes wonder into north-central corner of wa too, but there is as much grizzly there, as there are Sasquatches.
