do either of you speak very much French or do you keep a little phrase book handy?

I took French for a year in college. I can read it a little...maybe say a phrase or two....but learned quickly that reading it and speaking it are very different...especially hearing it spoken to you. I was definitely unprepared. So yeah, we bought a phrase book before we went luckily. And, to be honest, when most heard me stammering, they readily spoke English. I think they appreciated our attempt, but figured it'd be quicker to get through our exchange by speaking English to us.
