Here I've compiled my live read reactions and translation summaries from the Volume 13 Spoilers thread on the 86 Discord server, with minimal editing/additions. Obviously, MAJOR SPOILERS FOR VOLUME 13. You have been warned.
Chapter 5
SHIIIIIN :FredCry:
He hears how the soldiers are now even refusing to cooperate with each other to fight, and Shin's rage grows. He uses his ability to find another Morpho and orders everyone to follow as he hunts the next prey
I've never seen him this bitter and hateful and it scares me :FredCry:
I can't really blame Shin for losing his faith in humanity with all this going on. I also can't blame the Vargus for not trusting the other soldiers anymore after they were abandoned :HarutoSad:
(Oh yeah sorry I forgot to mention, Nidhogg is dead now. RIP Nidhogg)
RAIDEN :LenaYay:
Omg this is amazing
Shin gets blown away and it's by Raiden. Raiden turns his Para-RAID connection way up and starts shouting at Shin, calling him an idiot and a weakling who runs away from thinking and causes trouble for others. Shin is totally overwhelmed and speechless :RichardKEK:
"A dumb dog like you should be kept on a leash by his master for the rest of his life. See?" Shin finally notices that silverbell voice that had long been connected to the Para-RAID. "Her Majesty awaits."
Lena laughs. "Do you finally hear me, Undertaker? Vladilena Milize has returned to command. Sorry for making you worry, Shin."
And there's the Shinlena illustration :LenaBigHeart:
Holy crap Zashya is hardcore
She smuggled in the Para-RAID's commander settings in a data tag in her stomach??
Also Jonas seems to have realized this isn't the time to keep Lena away and is allowing it
Omg I'm crying
Shin sounds like a child on the verge of being scolded. He realizes how abnormal his thinking has been up to now and he's terrified that Lena is going to be disillusioned with him. Lena talks calmly to reassure him that she's not disillusioned or blaming him. Because she's made mistakes too, over and over.
Lena asks him, as a commander, is going after the next Morpho actually feasible? Shin thinks it over calmly and says they can. Grethe approves it. Shin, back to his usual self, says they will take out the Morpho but prioritize returning to base
Shin apologizes to Raiden and thanks him. Raiden is like "You'd better be thankful. I'm the one who stopped Lena from kicking your ass. If she did that, you wouldn't be able to recover." :RichardKEK:
Shin realizes that his way of thinking was the exact thing that made him so furious in others. Labeling people as the 'other,' blaming them, abandoning them, and deceiving oneself. He's capable of thinking that way too. Because he’s also weak and cowardly and stupid
Goddamn this is so good :FredShine:
We're back to Yuuto and Chitori :sniffsniff:
They climb up a spiral staircase of a church spire, hoping she could at least see her hometown from above. In the end, he couldn't help any of them go home. But they're so close. Chitori wants to make it there on her own feet, but Yuuto finally has to lend her his shoulder. Chitori says he should get away immediately if she tells him to, because she doesn't want him to get caught up in it :FredCry:
Chitori starts thanking Yuuto for everything, that she's glad she met him and she was happy. Yuuto interrupts her because he can't stand to hear it. He knows from the cries of the dead that people's last words are rarely so beautiful. He says that in the end, he couldn't do anything for them. But at the very least, he can listen to what she truly wants to say in the end. Chitori turns to him looking like a child about to cry. :KiriPain:
MIEL. I'M CRYING.. :FredCry:
With the MP dead and having no idea where to go, Miel is at a loss. He wants to cry like the other kids, but he endures. He has the pride of being the son of his father, who went to the Eighty-Sixth Sector alone. And he knows Theo, who was sent to the battlefield at his age, wouldn't cry over something like this. This isn't the time to cry. Don't give up. Don't give up. He grabs a handful of the bloodstained soil and sticks it in his pocket so he could take some part of that MP with him. He rouses the other kids to follow and they keep chasing after retreating soldiers until miraculously, he comes across a couple of Reginleifs
He shouts "I'm looking for Theoto Rikka! The Eighty-Six! Do you know him?!" One of the Reginleifs recalls the name, thinks it's someone the Reaper was close with. Miel is shocked to learn that Theo was a subordinate of someone with such a nickname. They agree to take the kids, since maybe it will help Shin's mood
I'M SO PROUD OF MY BOY :FredCry: :ShinCry: :KiriPain:
I think this has caused me the most emotional damage so far. I need a moment
UGGGGHHHHHH :ShinCry:
"...I don't want to die." Chitori cries. "I don't want to die. I didn't want to die this whole time. The Muellers, my adopted father and mother, were so nice. My new little sister Kaniha was so cute. I wanted to live with them. I wanted to go to school again. I wanted to thank them properly." She couldn't do any of that. Would Kaniha remember her? Were her adopted parents worried for her, or did they hate her for deceiving them? "I didn't want to come to this place I don't know, I wanted to go home. I wanted to see my father and mother and teacher and friends and Dustin. I wanted to become an adult. I wanted to go to the United Kingdom where my parents were born." She wanted to go somewhere far away, as far as she wanted.
I wanted to go there, with you.
Yuuto listens silently. He said he could at least listen. He wanted to. She could explode at any moment, but he thought he wouldn't mind. He knew she didn't want him to get caught up in it, but he thought he wouldn't mind it.
Finally, she finishes crying and wipes her tears. "Let's go."
Oh good we're finally back to Theo
JESUS CHRIST ERNST
He didn't even shoot the Bleachers, he BEAT THEM TO A PULP WITH THE GUNSTOCK
Ernst turns around with a guilty smile as if he were a father caught snitching food by his child. "Ahh, sorry, sorry. I made you see a grown adult venting his anger."
WTF ERNST
Ernst guesses Frederica is also there and says wait a minute, I'll clean up. He points the muzzle of the gun to Primevere's head. Primevere iS STILL BREATHING
Theo: "Ernst, whoa, wait, you don't have to kill her!"
Ernst: "Yes, but there's no reason to let her live either. Didn't I say I was venting my anger? At any rate, I don't care about anything. But if there's a fly buzzing right in front of my face, then I'm going to crush it. It's an eyesore."
Theo is speechless. Ernst smiles thinly. "Oh, didn't you realize it? It seemed Shin did, so I thought that made him hate me. Though it makes me happy as his guardian if I think of it like a rebellious phase."
Every one of Ernst's lines are so :LenaDeadInside:
Yes, Theo realized. Actually, this whole time, a part of him had been scared of Ernst. He wished for humanity and the world to be destroyed, didn't hold value in anything, even himself. But if people found out that the hero of the revolution was just a nihilistic monster, then the Federacy would truly fall apart.
Theo begs Ernst to stop, but Ernst is no longer listening.
Theo remembers what Frederica asked of him before he entered the house. "Theo. Theo, please. Tell him. You might not want to call him this, but at least right now, tell him in my place!"
A part of Frederica must have wanted to call him this, but she had resisted all this time, because Ernst was on the side that had taken everything from her.
Theo remembers that night they said they would return to the battlefield. Even though he'd been so busy, Ernst returned home because it was the Holy Birthday, with his arms full of documents regarding their future. He thinks that that was the only true thing inside this lying, empty dragon.
"Stop it already. ...Dad."
Like magic, the fire dragon stops moving. "That's..." He drops the assault rifle. "That's not fair..." He looks like he's about to cry. This grown man, old enough to be his father, looks at Theo and Frederica with a face like a small, lost child.
He says that yes, he wanted to be their parent. He wanted them to call him that. But to do so now, at this place, it was unfair. He covers his face with his bloody hands. "That's not fair. Because then, I can't betray you. If my own child, and two of them at that, try to stop me looking like they're about to cry, no father can betray that. I..." A tear slips from between his bloody fingers. "I'm your father. So I can't make you sad..."
I'm so glad this part of him wasn't a lie :ShinCry:
Yuuto and Chitori make it to the top of the church spire. Chitori looks toward the direction of the Republic territory of Noinarcissus, where there is only an empty plain
Chitori tells Yuuto about her hometown and about her favorite fairy tale. About a prince and a spirit who cross a rainbow bridge to meet every night. She turns to look at him, smiling. "If that prince really existed, I think he'd look like you, Yuuto."
"...That's the first time anyone's said that to me." He'd been compared to a Juggernaut before, many times. An emotionless battle machine like a Juggernaut or Legion.
"The first time?" Chitori giggles. "Then, I'll say more. Your hair is like beautiful moonlight, and your eyes are like nostalgic firelight." She says these beautiful words unbefitting of him. Like a beautiful but cruel spirit. "I'm sure you won't forget the girl who said this to you for the first time. I'll..."
I'll become your curse.
For a moment, Yuuto closes his eyes. Then somehow manages something like a smile. "Right. Let's go together, Chitori." Chitori smiles happily. "Thank you."
Chitori takes off her hair ribbon and hands it to him. Yuuto takes it, and after hesitating, kisses his palm holding the ribbon. Like a vow, that he had accepted her curse.
Smiling, Chitori steps back. "And I have one more thing to ask of you. Please, don't look at me after this."
Please remember me the way I am now.
"...Right."
Yuuto turns and leaves. Behind him, Chitori leans out the window, as if returning to heaven.
As he goes down the stairs, he hears the sound of an explosion. He doesn't even turn his eyes toward it.
Maybe it's too soon to say this, but guys, I think this might be my favorite volume. Or at least, it's near the top of my list
The writing is just great and it has nearly everything
God. I've lost count of how much I've cried already
The Strike Package is back at Rustkammer base. I really like Shin & Perschmann's interactions in this volume, very professional. It makes me sad seeing how they've prepared the base for battle though :sniffsniff:
Jeez, even the youngest of the Wulfsrin children are working as security for the civilians evacuating at the base :rowlet_wait:
WHOAAAAA
So Shin is talking with a female Wulfsin soldier. And she makes a joke to relieve his stress for a moment. "By the way Captain, how many years older do you go for? Would you like to play with fire with a grown woman after this?"
This makes Shin laugh but he says "Sorry, I have a girlfriend. Go find someone else."
"Yes Captain, I'm sure you have one or two or three or four girlfriends."
"She's one of the commanders of this base, and on top of that, she's the Queen."
The female soldier straightens up. "Excuse me, I'll shut up. I don't want to pick a fight with the Queen and have my head lopped off."
Then Pershmann nods in approval :LenaHehe:
That was fun
Anju learns that Dustin is MIA when she returns to the base. She feels surprisingly little grief or anger. She refuses to live begging and waiting for a miracle and being resentful when she doesn't get one. But.
"...Daiya." I wanted to go with you.
"Dustin." I wanted you to return to my side.
Please. "Come back to me...Dustin."
Some soldiers are clearly traumatized that they had to abandon their comrades and are being more easily lured in by self-propelled mines :rowlet_wait:
Shocked at seeing what's been done to the forest to prepare it for battle, the Eighty-Six feel that this base had truly become their home. The battle for Rustkammer base begins :sniffsniff:
Dustin is in bad shape, but he's alive and walking. The only weapon he has left is his pistol that's only useful for suicide. He comes across a little girl wearing a uniform. A Mascot who's been abandoned
(His RAID device is destroyed btw. It saved his neck from being sliced by shrapnel)
THis is so good :sniffsniff:
Dustin considers abandoning her. Because he already abandoned Chitori. He already betrayed Anju. Because he's already despicable. But then he remembers Anju's words. She said that he could cheat and say he's doing it for her. That she would bear some of his guilt if it means he'd survive. Is he going to turn that into a curse too? Yes, he hated cheating. And that's why he couldn't forgive himself for it. But even so, she accepted him. So even though he was weak, he could at least not make her sad.
Dustin holds his hand out to the girl. "Come here. Let's go together." He carries her through the woods. He was weak, but he had to at least make it back.
Yuuto is back where he and the girls found those geese. The girls found them cute so he didn't hunt them before, but this time he catches and eats one. He gives some meat to a starving crow and wishes the crows or rats would eat her so she could go back to her homeland in some way. He didn't give her a grave, just as the Eighty-Six had no graves. So they were the same. :sniffsniff:
Lena takes a break from commanding and takes TP to her room to try getting some rest. Jonas comes in with printouts of the maps of the battlefield and TP hisses and attacks him. Jonas is completely flummoxed. Lena says it serves him right for bullying her. Jonas denies it was bullying but Zashya glares at him and says he was acting like a pimp and he was an enemy of women. This time Lena laughs and takes TP to bed. Jonas keeps going "I'm not a bully...!" and the girls can see that he's clearly exhausted too. Annette offers him some tea, but she substituted sugar with instant coffee so he spits it out. :LenaKEKW: She tells him to get some rest too.
The battle at Rustkammer has been going on for three days. Everyone is exhausted but they're still able to tell jokes about the priest killing a self-propelled mine with a rock and so on. As long as they can still laugh, they can still fight
Gilwiese is literally forced by the doctors, his subordinates, and maintenance crew to get some sleep. I'm really gaining some respect for the guy...?
Looks like things are getting better, or rather, the military is starting to operate normally again
Crazy Bones Division is really putting in the work
Yatrai and his deputy commander/fiancee seem to really get along. :KaieThink: That's good, I guess?
If you're going to be in an arranged, political marriage, it's at least nice for it to be someone you're close to. She even flirted a bit
oh shit we're into the new year
January 2nd, 2151
The fighting in the Northern Front comes to an end. This really boosts morale for the other nine fronts
January 3rd, the battle at Rustkammer base ends :LenaYay:
HAHAHAHA
Shin reports that the Legion are retreating. Grethe asks him if he has enough strength to continue searching for the enemy for the entire Western Front? Shin is honestly completely exhausted but replies, "I can...but if I can get some kind of perk, I'll be more motivated." Grethe laughs and asks "You heard him, Colonel Milize. What's his reward?"
Lena is caught off guard by this. "Uh, um...I'll kiss you when I get back, Shin!" This won't get recorded on the mission recorder this time, but Shin can hear Grethe and other staff members laughing quietly
