Chapter 5 (Continued)
Anju is in disbelief that the battle is over, but Dustin isn't back yet. But her mind is still in battle mode so she can't feel any grief or regret yet. She's just in a daze.
Then Kurena comes running and grabs her hand. "Anju! Anju! Come on! Hurry!" Kurena looks like she's about to cry. "Dustin's back!"
Suddenly, all of Anju's emotions come back. She shakes her hand free from Kurena's and goes running the way she'd come from
Anju runs up to him, but then she doesn't know what to say. After all, she wasn't at his side then, and she couldn't even go searching for him. She'd prioritized her duties over him.
But Dustin just smiles. "Anju...thank god you're safe. I was saved because of you."
Anju doesn't understand.
"I heard your voice. You were wishing I would come back, weren't you? That reached me. That's why I knew I had to come back. That's why I survived and came back. I had to cheat, I'm so weak that I had to cheat, but you were waiting so I had to come back...it's thanks to you. It's thanks to those words you told me."
"I'm back, Anju. ...Didn't I tell you? I won't leave you behind."
I won't make you sad.
Anju starts crying and jumps into his arms and clings to him.
And Dustin thinks. When Anju told him he could cheat, it didn't mean to abandon others or throw away justice. She just wanted him to live and come back. To not sacrifice himself for justice or a mission or an ambition to save everyone. Even if he was powerless and couldn't save someone, crying and pathetic. Even then, she would surely accept him. That's what she was trying to say.
When Anju calms down, she finally notices the little girl who had been clinging to Dustin's leg the whole time. "Dustin, who's this child?"
"Ahh..." He thinks for a bit, then says jokingly. "Our child."
"What are you saying...!"
Dustin gets carried away and Anju talks to the girl and says let's go home. I think she's seriously gonna adopt this child :LenaKEKW:
Man, they didn't have any time to think about who's in which platoon or squadron during the battle so they were all mixed together and now Processors who didn't know each other before are hanging out. Good team building exercise?
Nice, Claude threw his fake glasses away during the battle
I'm still worried for Henry. :rowlet_wait: He's probably dead but I need confirmation
Man, Rito…
????
WHAT
NOOOOOOO :FredCry:
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
NOOOOOOOOOOO WHYYYYYYYYYYYY
OH THANK GOD AT LEAST HENRY LIVES
So during the battle for Rustkammer, some Republic evacuees fled there, but the battle was so fierce they had no choice but to just have them hide in trenches and pillboxes so they won't get in the way
Rito sees a dainty looking girl with long black hair and blue eyes walking toward a group of these Republic evacuees. He asks if she's one of the 'fawns.' She smiles and says he must be an Eighty-Six
"Thank goodness. So...please, overlook this. Pretend you didn't see. Let me, at least...get my revenge."
Rito grits his teeth and opens his canopy, because this wasn't something he could say without showing his face. "You can't." He couldn't let her be like Aldrecht.
"I can't let you, another Eighty-Six...be sad."
The girl blinks but then smiles. "In that case, don't let me be killed by the Republic. I don't have time left."
You kill me instead.
Strangely, he feels no conflict about it. "Okay." After all, this was what Captain Nouzen had been doing this whole time.
He gets out his assault rifle and aims it at her. The girl closes her eyes. "Thank you."
"Yeah." He pulls the trigger. The girl is shot in the chest and falls, smiling.
In the next moment, he feels a scorching heat and the world spins. He can barely think, so he doesn't realize that he's been shot and fallen out of his Reginleif. He sees a pair of military boots approach and stop in front of him. He can't look up, so he can only hear the voice. "Murderer."
".......?"
i'm rito, the eighty six.
so, i'm, not, a murderer.
A young woman approaches Lerche and Ludmilla. Her thin arms, chest, cheeks, and moon-white hair are stained red and she is sobbing. "I'm sorry. I, I was saved by this child. I knew by his voice, so I should have gone to him sooner. I couldn't save him, I couldn't get there in time, he's such a small child but I couldn't protect him. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry." She is carrying another person in her arms.
"Ri-" Lerche starts to say his name, but Ludmilla wants her to stop. When was it? It must have been a previous her. He'd looked at her and been scared. He'd said he didn't want to die, that he was afraid of death. So she thought that this person at least wouldn't have to die like she did.
"Sir Rito....."
The birds of death avoided saying people's names because it would be bad luck and disrespectful. And yet Lerche blurted his name in shock. Because that boy was so clearly dead.
(I don't want to translate this part but I think his brain is spilling out. He's dead dead. :FredCry:)
Do we all agree that this Alba woman is the one he saved from Lev? :ShinCry:
You know what. I hate it, but I respect it. *depressed slow clap* :ShinHuh:
God. Ludmilla was so devastated…
I enjoy doing these live reads but I have to say it hurt translating his last thoughts so soon after I read it :NotLikeLena:
My poor baby… :sniffsniff:
How has so much happened in this volume already and it’s not over?
