Chicago and Dublin Carol

I had a great experience last week, traveling to Chicago to see Dublin Carol.  Actually I saw it three times figuring that since I didn't see it in Providence when it was only an hour or so away I owed it to myself to maximize my viewing.  What a great show.  Steppenwolf was modern and very comfortable for theater watching.  Our seats were ( Read more... )

Well, I wanted to go to Chicago but it didn't work out.
I did see him in Providence, though. 3 times, also!

And I felt the same way. I read the play beforehand and even told my boss I was going to see a "depressing play...3 times!" But there was something so hopeful in all of it. And that was definitely Billy. I think he gave the role so much dignity. It really was incredible.

I'm glad you had a nice time. I really do want to see him when he hits the stage again in July. I just have to really start saving like...yesterday.

And go into therapy over that fear of flying thing...

Yes, it was a really cool thing to do. July and Blackbird are coming up quickly enough so I am already saving for that. I thought that 3 times for DC was ok since it is not as sad as it might seem but Blackbird may be a little too intense for three. Maybe a tranquilizer and a nonstop will get you there.

Since you saw the play 3 times in RI, I wondered if you remembered the very last part of the last scene?
Did John stare out the door and then sit down on a stool near the door and look very sorrowfully out over the audience's heads in that production. He did in Chicago. When reading the stage directions from the play itself, that is not mentioned. Wondered if that was Amy Morton or WP and if they had tried that in RI?
Thanks. BTW, I thought it was great.

Well, I asked my friend, who has a steel trap for a mind, since I didn't remember it that way.
We both agreed that he went to the sink and washed his face (and during the last performance) I saw him do that. He was looking right in my direction at that point. The previous two shows, his back was to us at that point.

Then, he put on his coat and hat and I think he stopped and looked out. But, I left the theater with the impression that he was going to see his wife.

I don't know if he sat or not. And neither does she. I do know that people seemed confused about whether it was over until the lights abruptly went down and then they all came back for their curtain calls.
