If you couldn't bear seeing Millie dead in a mouse trap, you may not want to get a cat. Cats are fantastic pets and great mousers. However, in my experiences of having both cats and mice in the house, I must warn you of a huge ICK factor.
First of all, if the cat is older and domesticated, you're in for "Gifts". This usually define the cat bringing the kill to you, or leaving it somewhere that you will find it. Church, our big russian blue kitty, was an indoor/outdoor cat and he used to bestow upon us everything from mice, to birds, to a completely skinned squirrel once.
If you get a younger kitty, like our little orange and white Oliver, you may find that they don't mouse at all, or if they do, they eat the mouse completely, and tend to get sick from it.
Cats are great hunters, but as a loving and affectionate owner, be prepared to see many more dead mice or other creatures if you decide to get one to keep your home rodent free.
::hugs::
