Hello, I'm applying for Animation this summer and I have a small issue.. although it still concerns me greatly.
I just finished all my three drawings for the requirements.. however, I'm not sure if this is okay (warning: nude). This is Assignment C (technical skill drawing). What I'm concerned about it is that some of the drawings in there are ( Read more... )

For my technical skill drawing I applied with a somewhat detailed (but by no means photorealistic) life drawing I did of a car. Pretty simple, but it showed the fundamentals of understanding technical drawing. I think when they said 'technical' they meant stuff like architecture, vehicles, mechanics... Things that aren't organic, basically. So my suggestion might be to put your figure drawings in a different section of the portfolio, if possible.

Hi! Thanks for replying!
I've seen examples of technical drawings that were accepted by CSSSA and they were actually figure drawings. (: But thanks for the idea, I'll consider doing architecture stuff and such if I really need to redo it!

I think your figure drawings look great! I don't think you have anything to worry about submitting these. You may want to do some more that are similar, but that's just an idea =) My technical drawing for when I went in 2008 was a stippled drawing of my cat, and somehow I got in, haha....

There are multiple reasons that many art schools enjoy looking at rough drawings, and one is because it shows the very bare and minimum of what you know. If you are doing something by habit, right away in 30 second drawings, then it's likely you are doing that in all of your drawings. This is good for future use of catching mistakes you are making instinctively.

However, CSSSA - at least back when I applied about 3 years ago - is not so picky. They just want to see where you're at, when you apply yourself to a piece. Your grasp of lighting, anatomy, gesture, or what ever you feel they should see. (Which means you can submit anything you see fit, from anatomy studies, to a drawing of a car.)

Good luck with your application (:
